HP Instant Capacity for HP Integrity Superdome 2 Servers
9
Acquiring HP iCAP resources
iCAP components can be acquired as part of the initial system purchase, added to an iCAP system
(a server that was ordered and installed with iCAP components), or added to a non-iCAP system
(a server that was ordered and installed with no iCAP components).
Figure 3: Process to acquire and install iCAP components
Purchasing and installing an iCAP system or adding the components to an already installed non-iCAP
system is essentially the same process as acquiring standard system resources from HP with a couple
of additional steps as shown in Figure 3 and outlined as follows:
1. Submit a purchase order for the server, including the iCAP components or for the add-on
iCAP components.
2. Install the iCAP server or iCAP components onsite and configure partitions as desired.
3. All relevant patches necessary for correct iCAP operation need to be installed
(
see the current Instant Capacity user’s guide).
4. The most current version of iCAP software should be installed and run on each partition.
5. Configure iCAP notifications to be sent to the designated iCAP system manager.
6. Familiarize with the HP Utility Pricing Solutions portal and the process for updating iCAP inventory
on it.
7. If iCAP cores have been installed, use the iCAP commands provided to activate IAC on each core
as necessary (
see the current Instant Capacity user’s guide).
8. Test the operation of application software when iCAP cores are activated and deactivated.
9. iCAP memory purchased needs to be installed only on an iCAP blade. A blade with iCAP memory
should be powered off to comply with the iCAP Terms and Conditions.
To add additional iCAP components to an already-installed system:
1. Order the add-on products along with the add-on installation. (Some product numbers for field
installation might be different than for factory installation. Contact an HP sales representative for
actual product numbers to be ordered).
2. The HP Customer Engineer (CE) installs the add-on hardware.
3. Use appropriate iCAP commands provided, the number of active cores have to be in compliance
with the iCAP contract (
see the current Instant Capacity user’s guide).
4. If iCAP blades have been installed, use appropriate iCAP commands provided to activate IAC on
each iCAP core as necessary (
see the current Instant Capacity user’s guide).
5. If iCAP memory has been purchased, add it only to an iCAP blade unless sufficient memory RTUs
are available.
