HP Instant Capacity for HP Integrity Superdome 2 Servers

Benefits of HP iCAP
With iCAP, customers can preinstall reserve capacity in the form of blades and memory that can be
used for future system expansion when the system’s environment experiences rapid and unexpected
growth in its workload. The cost to have the reserve capacity installed is just a fraction of its regular
purchase price, and when the remainder of the regular purchase price is paid, the reserve capacity
can be activated.
Other major benefits of using the iCAP program are summarized in Table 3.
Table 3: Features and benefits of iCAP
Feature/function Customer benefit
Ability to install reserve capacity at a fraction of its purchase
price in anticipation of future requirements
Simplifies capacity planning
Ability to dial up (and down) cores using HP TiCAP Meets periodic or unforeseen temporary spikes in workload
Ability to move RTUs from a partition in one server to
another partition in the same server or to a partition in
another server
Creates low-cost disaster recovery or backup servers,
performs workload balancing among partitions and servers,
and pools TiCAP balances
Reduced downtime, risks, and hassles of having to order
and install additional resources
Decreases operational impact
Lesser cost for resources until they are used Links IT costs to revenue
No price premium Takes advantage of future technology price decreases to
deliver superior value
No expiration of HP iCAP
There is no time limit for activating iCAP. iCAP components can be installed in a system and can
remain inactive for as long as you own the system.
There is also no time limit on TiCAP, which can be applied to a system and kept available for future
use for as long as you own the system.
System and application software licenses
Many third-party software products, such as Oracle Database, are license-based on the number of
cores. Some software vendors only count activated cores toward license prices requiring users to
increase their software license fees when they activate more cores.
Software vendors are changing their licensing models to accommodate the current trend toward
increased virtualization and dynamic changes in system resources. Contact your software vendors to
determine the impact of installing and activating iCAP cores.
Warranty
The warranty on iCAP components is the same as the warranty on regularly purchased components
and starts when they are installed. After the warranty period expires and until iCAP components are
permanently activated they are covered by HP support services for any failure. After iCAP
components are permanently activated they are no longer iCAP components and must be added to
the system service contract as a standard component.
TiCAP includes system hardware and software support services while the iCAP cores are
temporarily activated.
