HP Instant Capacity for HP Integrity Superdome 2 Servers

Monitoring instant access and temporary capacity usage
TiCAP and IAC days are combined in each partition and only one balance is kept, which is called the
TiCAP balance.
The iCAP software calculates when the balance of temporary capacity will expire based on the
current consumption rate. When the balance reaches a residual of 15 days or less (this parameter
can be set by the user), an e-mail message is automatically sent to the iCAP system manager, if
specified, and the root system manager.
You can use the “icapstatus” command to obtain useful information regarding TiCAP usage,
including:
• The amount of temporary capacity remaining in days, hours, and minutes
• Number of active cores with usage rights
• Number of cores using temporary capacity
• Number of cores that can be activated with additional usage rights
• The projected temporary capacity expiration time and date, based on the current consumption rate,
which can help you plan for renewal of the TiCAP or the permanent activation of the cores.
Sharing usage rights
Usage rights can be shared among servers using HP Global Instant Capacity (GiCAP). GiCAP
operation for Superdome 2 servers is built on the concept of a collection of HP Integrity Superdome 2
servers, called a GiCAP group, within which users can share usage rights for iCAP cores and TiCAP
for iCAP cores. All partitions in all members of a GiCAP group must be running the same version
of iCAP.
Creating an HP GiCAP group
The systems that can be grouped together are specified in the GiCAP Grouping Rules. (Grouping
rules can be downloaded at the utility solutions portal
http://www.hp.com/go/payperuse. Access to
the portal requires a user name and password to login). Unlike iCAP versions on HP 9000 and
HP Integrity mid-range and Superdome servers, there is no GiCAP Group Manager in this release of
iCAP on Superdome 2 servers. However, both Group Manager as well as standby Group Manager
concepts will be introduced in a later release.
When the members of a group have been determined, customers can:
1. Purchase the appropriate quantity of GiCAP Sharing Rights and support based on the total
quantity of iCAP cores in the group.
2. Add servers to the group within the restriction of the grouping rules and the quantity of sharing rights.
3. Additional servers (as specified by the GiCAP Grouping Rules) can be added to the group as long
as the total number of iCAP cores does not exceed the number of GiCAP Sharing Rights.
4. It is recommended that the user use the Create Codewords link on Utility Pricing Solutions portal
and then the Create GiCAP Codeword link to assign the GiCAP Sharing Rights to each server in
the GiCAP group.
