HP-UX 11i v3 Persistent DSF Migration Guide
Agile Naming Support
This section discusses limitations to agile naming support (that is, the use of persistent DSFs) at the introduction
of HP-UX 11i v3, as well as backward compatibility and backward compatibility exceptions.
Subsystems with No Persistent DSF Support at HP-UX 11i v3 Introduction
The subsystems listed below do not currently support the use of persistent DSFs. Use of persistent DSFs may
require, as detailed below, that users replace an existing subsystem with a different one, or that they use a later
version of that subsystem, which may not be available at HP-UX 11i v3 introduction. HP recommends that users
check the following web sites or in the Read before Migrating to HP-UX 11i v3
section for the latest information
on possible replacement products and on newer subsystems versions that would support the use of persistent
DSFs.
The following subsystems and applications do not support persistent DSFs at the first release of HP-UX 11i v3:
HP Openview Storage Data Protector 6.0: Support of persistent DSFs is provided in patch
PHSS_36400.
HP Openview Storage Data Protector 5.5: Openview Storage Data Protector 5.5 servers
are not supported in HP-UX 11i v3. Openview Storage Data Protector 5.5
clients support legacy DSFs only. Users must migrate to DP 6.0 (or later
version) to get support for persistent DSFs with the HP Openview Storage Data
Protector software.
HP Storage Works Command View SDM supports legacy DSFs only.
Library & Tape Tools version 4.2 SR1 is required for support in HP-UX 11i v3 with both
legacy and persistent DSFs.
Storage System Scripting Utility (SSSU): Version 6.0 and lower does not support persistent
DSFs. Version 6.0.2 or later is required for persistent DSF support.
dvd+rw tools (commands like growisofs or dvd+rw-format) operate properly with legacy
DSFs only.
vPars does not support creation or modification of virtual partitions using the agile view. But
you can use persistent DSFs on the partition after the partition has been
created. For more information on vPars, see
http://docs.hp.com/en/vse.html#vPars
.
VERITAS Volume Manager (VxVM) 4.1 supports legacy DSFs only. Persistent DSFs are
supported in VxVM 5.0. For more information, see
http://docs.hp.com/en/oshpux11iv3.html#VxVM and the Migration from Legacy
to Agile Naming Model in VxVM 5.0 on HP-UX 11i v3 white paper at:
http://docs.hp.com/en/5992-4212/5992-4212.pdf.
Third-party applications related to mass storage: Users must check with the vendors whether
the applications are impacted by the persistent DSFs and if they are, whether
it is possible to use them with persistent DSFs.
NOTE: If you use any applications that do not support agile naming, be aware that a full migration (removing
the legacy view with the rmsf –L command) might not be possible. See the Disable Legacy DSFs
section.
Subsystems Requiring the Legacy View at HP-UX 11i v3 Introduction
The following application requires the legacy view to not be removed at the first release of HP-UX 11i v3:
Ignite-UX: If you create an Ignite-UX image of your system and later remove the legacy view
with the rmsf -L command, you cannot restore your system with the image.
NOTE: If you use any applications that do not support agile naming or that require you not to remove the
legacy view, be aware that a full migration (removing the legacy view with the rmsf –L command) might not
be possible. See the Disable Legacy DSFs
section.
