HP-UX 11i v3 Installation and Update Guide, September 2011
B Installing VxFS, OnlineJFS, LVM, and VxVM
Starting with the HP-UX 11i v3 September 2011 Operating Environment Update Release (OEUR),
the recommended (default-installed) selection for all systems is VxFS 5.0.1 plus LVM.
The previous HP-UX 11i v3 OEUR included the 4.1 and 5.0 versions of VxFS. The recommended
(default-installed) selection was VxFS 5.0 plus LVM.
In HP-UX 11i v3 September 2011 OEUR, the following software is included:
• VxFS 4.1 (Base-VXFS bundle) — required (always-installed) in all OEs
• OnlineJFS 4.1 (B3929EA bundle) — optional in DC-OE, VSE-OE, and HA-OE
• VxFS 5.0.1 (Base-VxFS-501 bundle) — recommended (default-installed) in all OEs
• OnlineJFS 5.0.1 (B3929GB bundle) — recommended (default-installed) in DC-OE, VSE-OE
and HA-OE
• Logical Volume Manager (BaseLVM bundle) – required (always-installed) in all OEs
• VxVM 5.0.1 (Base-VxVM-501 and Base-VxTools-501 bundles) — optional in all OEs
The following sections describe the implications of the current delivery methods for VxFS, OnlineJFS,
LVM, and VxVM. If you want to remain on the configurations VxFS 4.1 with VxVM 4.1 or VxFS
5.0 with VxVM 5.0, see “Other supported configurations” (page 84).
Default install of VxFS changed from 5.0 to 5.0.1
With the September 2008 OEUR, VxFS 4.1 and 5.0 were included in the release, and VxFS 4.1
was installed by default. With the September 2009 OEUR, VxFS 4.1 and 5.0 were still included
in the release, but VxFS 5.0 was installed by default.
Starting with the September 2011 OEUR, VxFS 4.1 and 5.0.1 are included in the release, and
VxFS 5.0.1 is installed by default. Although VxFS 4.1 is required (always-installed) software, your
installation will default to VxFS 5.0.1.
If you prefer to remain on VxFS 4.1, you must explicitly deselect VxFS 5.0.1 in the Ignite-UX tool.
For more details about remaining on VxFS 4.1, see the white paper referenced in “Other supported
configurations” (page 84)
VxVM 5.0 replaced by VxVM 5.0.1
Starting with the September 2011 release, VxVM 5.0 has been replaced by VxVM 5.0.1. Note,
however, that VxVM 5.0.1 is optional, and LVM is installed by default. To install VxVM 5.0.1,
you must select it in Ignite-UX.
Supported VxFS 5.0.1, OnlineJFS 5.0.1, LVM, and VxVM 5.0.1 installations are achievable with
proper selections in Ignite-UX. The following sections describe the steps required to get to each
possible configuration:
• “Cold-installing VxFS with LVM or with VxVM” (page 82)
• “Updating to VxFS with VxVM with update-ux” (page 83)
• “Updating from HP-UX 11i v2 with OnlineJFS 4.1 to HP-UX 11i v3 with OnlineJFS 5.0.1”
(page 83)
Also see “Unsupported system configurations” (page 84) for information on what happens when
unsupported configurations are attempted.
Cold-installing VxFS with LVM or with VxVM
The following sections describe the steps required for each supported cold-install configuration.
VxFS 5.0.1 with LVM configuration
A default cold-install will result in an LVM system with VxFS 5.0.1 and OnlineJFS 5.0.1 installed
(OnlineJFS is only available on the DC-OE, VSE-OE and HA-OE, so it will not be installed with the
BOE). No additional selections in Ignite-UX user are needed to cold-install this configuration.
