Update to USB Driver Support on HPUX 11iv3

Introduction

HP is providing an update to the USB support on HP-UX 11iv3 which contains the following

enhancements:

 USB 2.0 hi-speed (EHCI) capability at runtime

 DVD write capability

 Support for additional hardware

 IRC support

 Hub support

Please read this entire document for important information on installing and using this new

functionality, devices supported, and some changes in the USB information presented to users.

Patch History The USB-02 driver is released as kernel patches. The following table lists these patches starting from the latest to oldest. It describes the features introduced and defects resolved by each patch. Subsequent USB patches will contain these capabilities.

Integrated Remote Console Support using iLO IRC is supported in PHKL_39407 and subsequent patches. In order to use IRC with the X server, patch PHSS_39258 must also be installed. USB Hub Support With the release of PHKL_39820 (September 2009), the HP-UX USB-02 driver officially supports hubs. This support includes but is not limited to low speed devices attached to high speed hubs. The driver also supports configurations in which multiple hubs are chained together.

Special Installation Instructions for Users of rx8640 and Integrity Superdome If you are installing the latest USB-02 patch on an rx8640 or Integrity Superdome, the USB drivers may not be built into the kernel unless an A6869/Obsidian or AD307A was present when the system was initially installed. When you later wish to take advantage of the USB capabilities of these cards, you must ensure that the USB drivers get built into the kernel.

3) Because of the dynamic nature of the USB bus and the devices on it, it is possible that the association of device special files to actual USB devices may change in certain circumstances. a. When you disconnect a USB device at runtime and reconnect it to a different port, the device special file may be different. b. When you put a new USB device into a port previously occupied by another device, the new device may have the same device special file as the old one did. c.

Manually Configuring USB-02 Normally the patch will configure itself after installation. This will not be true if you install the latest USB-02 patch before swremove of an earlier version of USB-00. In that case you need to do a manual configuration *after* removing USB-00 version C or earlier from the system.

Updating HP-UX After Installation of these Patches Updating from HP-UX 11iv3 to a later version of HP-UX 11iv3 prior to the HP-UX Software Release for March 2009 No unusual USB related messages will be output during the update process. If you did not deselect USB-00 before starting the update however, when the update is completed, the new USB functionality delivered by the latest USB-02 patch will be disabled and you will have version C of USB-00 installed on your system.
