Abstract This white paper discusses changes made to the setboot command to take advantage of several features introduced in HP-UX 11i v3. It is intended for HP-UX system administrators who use setboot to manage/modify boot variables in stable storage. Background HP-UX 11i v3 incorporates many advanced features and improvements.

History of the setboot Command The setboot command displays and modifies boot variables in stable storage. Some of these variables are – • • • • • Primary Boot Path HA Alternate Boot Path (supported on some platforms) Alternate Boot Path AutoBoot AutoSearch (supported on HP 9000 platforms only) In HP-UX releases up to 11i v2, setboot accepted only hardware paths as valid input for Primary, HA Alternate and Alternate boot paths.

The setboot Command on HP-UX 11i v3 This section gives a high level overview of the two key enhancements mentioned above - the next generation mass storage stack and Dual-Core Intel Itanium 2 Hyper-Threading support. The Next Generation Mass Storage Stack HP-UX 11i v3 introduces a new agile addressing scheme with a new representation of mass storage devices, also known as the agile view.

While the specification of persistent DSF is recommended to enable the use of the agile view by setboot, there may be cases where a particular lunpath is preferred, for example if one of the lunpaths has a faster I/O capability. The lunpath hardware path can be used as input to setboot in such cases. Note however that as above setboot may select another lunpath to the same LUN if the lunpath given is currently offline or disabled.

Legacy Addressing For backward compatibility, setboot still supports the use of legacy hardware paths to define the boot path. When a legacy hardware path is given as input, setboot maps the legacy hardware path to the corresponding lunpath hardware path and writes that lunpath hardware path to stable storage. Thus, the output shows the lunpath hardware path and the associated persistent DSF, instead of the legacy hardware path initially provided as input.

Dual-Core Intel® Itanium® 2 Hyper-Threading Support The new generation of the Itanium 2 processor incorporates several advanced features and improvements, including multiple cores per processor and multiple hardware threads per core. The Dual-Core Intel Itanium 2 (also referred to as Montecito) processor supports chip level multithreading by incorporating two complete 64-bit cores on one processor. Each hardware thread appears as a separate processor to applications and the operating system.

Impacts to Other Subsystems This section describes how other HP-UX subsystems are affected by the changes to setboot. The changes for the mass storage stack and Hyper-Threading support have affected certain subsystems of HP-UX. Booting an HP 9000 system from the BCH menu On HP 9000 systems, the system boot environment is the Boot Console Handler (BCH). The system boot environment is used to locate boot devices and launch pre-boot applications.

Ignite-UX The Ignite-UX product operates in the agile view to take advantage of the multi-pathing and failover features. During a cold install, Ignite-UX lets the user choose the Root Disk by selecting a lunpath hardware path to the disk. A More Info screen displays the mapping between the lunpath hardware path selected and the corresponding legacy hardware path for users more familiar with the legacy format.

Appendix A: Examples of setboot Usage The following examples illustrate the usage of setboot with the new options. Outputs of the scsimgr and ioscan commands have also been included for clarity. The output of ioscan has been trimmed for readability. Note: ioscan has been used throughout these examples to illustrate the mappings between (a) legacy and lunpath hardware paths, (b) persistent and legacy DSFs and the lunpath hardware paths to a LUN.

Glossary Agile Addressing The ability to address a LUN with the same device special file regardless of the physical location of the LUN or the number of paths leading to it. In other words, the device special file for a LUN remains the same even if the LUN is moved from one HBA to another, moved from one switch/hub port to another, presented via a different target port to the host, or configured with multiple hardware paths. Lunpath The physical hardware path leading to a SCSI logical unit. A SCSI LUN can have more than one lunpath. Lunpath Hardware Path Representation of a hardware path for a mass storage device. It is identical in format to a legacy hardware path, up to the HBA. Beneath the HBA, additional addressing is represented in hexadecimal. The string “0/2/1/0.0x50001fe1500170ac.0x4017000000000000” is an example of a lunpath hardware path.
