Interface Card OL* Support Guide

3 Attention Button - Direct Slot Control
This chapter describes methods and procedures to perform OL* operations using the Attention
Button.
This chapter addresses the following topics:
Introduction to the Attention Button, Power LED, and Attention LED
Using the Attention Button
Locating a Slot With the Attention LED
The hotplugd Daemon and Log file
Results of Pressing the Attention Button
IMPORTANT: It is not possible to perform an Online Deletion using the Attention Button
NOTE: Although Attention Button is used throughout this document, it can also be called
DoorBell, hotplug, and Attention Indicator.
Introduction to the Attention Button, Power LED, and Attention LED
OL* compatible slots have a power LED, an Attention LED, the Attention Button, and a Manual
Release Latch, all contained on an OLX Divider. The term Attention Button also describes the
method for hardware triggered hot-plug operations with minimum or no console interactions.
The Attention Button is a momentary-contact push button located adjacent to each hot-plug slot,
which you press to initiate a hot insertion or hot removal. The Manual Retention Latches (MRLs)
are called latches in this document. Look closely at the OLX Divider to determine which slot is
associated with the divider. A light pipe on the divider carries the LED light to another location
on the divider for easy viewing.
For specifics on LED and Attention Button positioning on your system, see your system
documentation.
The power LED indicates the power state of the slot. The power LED also provides visual feedback
when hot-plug operations are event-driven, initiated by the latch, or initiated by the Attention
Button. The power LED begins to blink when the event is initiated and continues to blink until
the hot-plug operation finishes. At that point, the power LED changes from BLINK to OFF or
ON. Table 3-1 describes the power LED states.

The success or failure of an event driven hot-plug operation is communicated by the power LED.
Therefore, the meaning of the power LED state depends on the context. An event driven OLA
starts with the power LED in the steady OFF state. When you close the latch and press the
Attention Button, the power LED begins blinking. When the operation is complete, the power
LED enters its terminal state.
For an event driven OLR, the operation begins with the power LED in the steady ON state. When
you press the Attention Button, the power LED begins blinking. If the power LED transitions to
the steady OFF state, then the operation has succeeded. If the power LED transitions from BLINK
to steady ON, then the operation has failed.
