HP-UX 11i v3 Installation and Update Guide, September 2008 (Update 3 Release)

CAUTION: Removing the OnlineDiag bundle or the SysFaultMgmt bundle, or
both, prevents products with dependencies on the diagnostics from functioning
correctly. If the OnlineDiag bundle or the SysFaultMgmt bundle are not installed,
protections from some hardware failures are removed. Without these bundles installed
on your system, it is much harder to troubleshoot and fix problems when a hardware
failure occurs. To ensure the reliability of your computer system, HP highly recommends
that you install the OnlineDiag and SysFaultMgmt bundles with HP-UX 11i v3.
With a media install, the OnlineDiag and SysFaultMgmt bundles are installed by
default with any HP-UX 11i Operating Environment.
The following lists the uses of tools contained in OnlineDiag and SysFaultMgmt
bundles:
Protects your system from hardware failures, for example, memory problems.
Includes EMS Hardware Monitors that notifies you of hardware events.
Maintains logs that help you determine the cause of failures.
Enables you to troubleshoot system problems with the system online.
Starting with the HP-UX 11i v3 March 2008 release, upon a successful OE upgrade,
SFM is the default monitoring system for monitoring the core hardware components.
Online Diagnostics, which is included in the OnlineDiag bundle, is shut down as
soon as an OE upgrade is initiated. Upon the successful completion of the OE upgrade,
SFM is the default monitoring system. However, STM, which is included in the
OnlineDiag bundle, restarts and continues to function properly.
The SFMIndicationProvider, which is included in the SysFaultMgmt bundle,
replaces certain EMS Hardware Monitors. However, you can continue to receive all
the events from the remaining EMS Hardware Monitors through the EMS framework.
Indications generated by the SFMIndicationProvider can be directed to the EMS
framework through the WBEM Wrapper Monitor. For information on the monitors
that the SFMIndicationProvider replaces, and for instructions on how to switch
to the EMS monitoring mode, see the SFM Release Notes available at
http://docs.hp.com/en/diag.html
NOTE: You can continue to receive all the events from the remaining EMS Hardware
Monitors through the EMS framework. Indications generated by the
SFMIndicationProvider can be directed to the EMS framework through the WBEM
Wrapper Monitor.
To switch to Online Diagnostics for monitoring the core hardware components, you
must switch from the SFM mode to the EMS mode. To switch to the EMS mode, enter
the following command at the HP-UX prompt:
# /opt/sfm/bin/sfmconfig -w -e
