Understanding HP Instant Capacity (iCAP) version 6.x and 7.x Codewords Whitepaper

HP Utility Pricing Solutions Portal
When a system is ordered with iCAP components, it comes from the factory with the correct expected-
inactive count for each component recorded in non-volatile memory (NVRAM). The iCAP inventory for
the system can be displayed by running the icod_stat command. After the system has been
delivered and installed, the iCAP inventory can be changed by purchasing either additional iCAP
components or usage rights to permanently activate existing iCAP components. After the purchase
order has been accepted by HP, a letter is sent describing how to obtain a codeword to fulfill the
order. After HP receives the purchase order, it takes a few days for the order to propagate to the HP
Utility Pricing Solutions Portal. The HP Utility Pricing Solutions Portal exists to allow codewords to be
generated to complete the transaction, and the iCAP inventory will be adjusted on the system to reflect
the additional iCAP components and/or usage rights on the purchase order.
The HP Utility Pricing Solutions Portal can be accessed at www.hp.com/go/icap/portal. In order to
access the portal, it is necessary to register and set up an account. Anyone can establish an account.
To establish an account, the following information is required:
Name
Company name
Country
E-mail address
After registration, a temporary password is sent to the account e-mail address. That password must be
changed at the first login.
To generate a codeword from the portal, the following information is required:
System serial number (from output of the icod_stat -s command)
System product number (from output of the icod_stat -s command)
An audit snapshot (from output of the icod_stat -s command)
HP sales order number
Knowledge of the number of iCAP cores, cells, and memory affected
After the codeword has been retrieved from the portal, it can be applied to the system, using the
icod_modify command.
Types of codewords
There are different types of codewords, depending upon their intended use. Each codeword contains
the following encoded information:
Codeword type
System serial number
Sequence number (based on the current date and time)
Quantity of components
The information for the codeword is encrypted and can only be decoded by the iCAP software.
Codewords are only valid on the system for which they were generated, and codewords cannot be
reused. Invalid codewords are rejected by the iCAP software.
The different types of codewords are as follows:
Add-on codeword: When iCAP components are added to a system, an add-on codeword is used.
This codeword increases the number of expected-inactive components on the system. For example,
