Known Problems This section contains critical, late-breaking information that was not included in the HP-UX 11i Version 2 Installation and Update Guide. Before cold-installing or updating to HP-UX 11i v2, be sure to read this entire section and Appendix B in the HP-UX 11i Version 2 Installation and Update Guide. For information and patches for other known problems, go to the HP IT Resource Center Web site: http://itrc.hp.
A5158A PCI Tachlite Fibre Channel Adapter Not Supported on HP-UX 11i v2 PA-RISC Platforms The A5158A PCI Tachlite Fibre Channel adapter is not supported on the HP-UX 11i v2 September 2004 release on PARISC platforms at this time. This card is supported on HP-UX 11i v2 on Itanium-based platforms. What To Do For updates, please check the IT Resource Center Web site: http://itrc.hp.com Search the technical knowledge base using the keyword JAGaf38985.
Deferred Fileset Installation on Itanium-based Systems Updating from Earlier HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23) Releases When HP-UX 11i v2 September 2004 is being installed as an update to an existing HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23) Itanium-based server, the PHKL_31500.CORE-KRN will be excluded. This omission will pose no risk to the system or create installation errors or warnings. What To Do There is no need to address this issue, as the fileset should be added as a part of future patch installs.
Do Not Use HP-UX Bootloader ls Command The HP-UX bootloader on the installation media has a known problem with the built-in ls command. This command is similar to the HP-UX ls command, but it is not the same as the HP-UX ls command that you would normally use after HP-UX is installed. The bootloader's built-in ls command will not work if executed with no arguments or if it is executed to display information for a file that is not present on the media.
EnhancedVFS Not Being Cleaned Up After Updating from HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11) After you update from HP-UX 11i (B.11.11) to HP-UX 11i v2 with the EnhancedVFS product installed on the system, there is an empty bundle wrapper left on the system: EnhancedVFS B.11.11.01 All the product and patches contained in EnhancedVFS have been removed but the bundle tag is left on the system. This does not cause any issue with the HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23) system. It also does not cause any swverify issues.
HP Does Not Recommend Combining Root ("/") and Boot ("/stand") Directories When creating a custom file system configuration that utilizes volume management, having the root ("/") and boot ("/stand") directories on the same partition is not recommended. Default configurations have root and boot directories in separate partitions when volume management is active. What To Do The preferred approach is to use the default file system configuration when installing HP-UX.
OnlineDiag Bundle Needs to be Loaded The September 2004 OnlineDiag version is C.46.00 (B.11.23.03.xx). If you remove or do not install the OnlineDiag bundle, some products with dependencies on OnlineDiag will not function correctly. To ensure the reliability of your computer system, HP recommends strongly that you load the OnlineDiag bundle: • Each OnlineDiag release provides the latest tools and hardware monitors. • Support Tools give you multiple protection against hardware failures.
Patch Bundle Required for Updating from HP-UX 11i v1.6 or Previous Release of HP-UX 11i v2 If you cold-install HP-UX 11i v2 September 2004, or update from HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11) to HP-UX 11i v2 September 2004, you do not need to load the August 2004 version of BUNDLE11i. Prior to updating a system from HP-UX 11i v1.6 (B.11.22) or a previous version of HP-UX 11i v2 to HP-UX 11i v2 September 2004, you must load the August 2004 version of BUNDLE11i.
7. Select download selected. Follow the instructions to download the August 2004 version of BUNDLE11i to your system. Please note that the patches in the August 2004 version of BUNDLE11i provide a fix for link failures that could potentially be seen when trying to generate a new kernel. HP recommends the install of the August 2004 version of BUNDLE11i as follows: 1. Use this swinstall command to load BUNDLE11i from the DVD. In this example, the DVD is mounted at /dvd_mount_point.
The August 2004 version of BUNDLE11i: • MUST be installed prior to updating from an earlier release of HP-UX 11i v2 or from HP-UX 11i v1.6. • MUST be installed prior to installing the September 2004 version of BUNDLE11i. • Is recommended for installation on any Itanium-based system running HP-UX 11i v1.
"System does not have a root password" Warning During a cold install, you may encounter the following warning messages in your swagent.log: WARNING: System does not have a root password. You have selected a security level that will not allow remote root logins without a password. To login, you will have to use a local console. What to Do If you have already set your root password, disregard this message. Otherwise, you will need to set your root password to enable login from a secure shell.
System Firmware Requirements The following minimum firmware requirements exist for systems cold-installing and updating to HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23) September 2004. • For HP 9000 PA-RISC Servers, you must update to the minimum firmware revision before cold-installing or updating from HP-UX 11i v1 (B.11.11) to the HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23) September 2004 release or later.
System Hangs After Issuing Large I/O (>512 KB in size) to Fibre Channel Devices System hangs may be experienced after issuing large I/O (>512 KB in size) directly to physical disks accessed by a single port Fibre Channel adapter (product number A6795A or A5158A, claimed by the td driver). I/O through file systems and/or logical volumes will not issue such a large I/O.
Use the shutdown Command Instead of reboot Command In rare cases, the reboot command may hang if a catastrophic hardware or operating system problem happens during shutdown. In previous versions of HP-UX, a timeout and panic occurs if the system does not completely shutdown after 10 minutes. The system now waits indefinitely for the shutdown process to complete. What to Do HP recommends you do not use the reboot command. Use the shutdown command instead.
VxVM Disk Group Error During Install No validation is done on the disk group name to see if it conflicts with a disk group name currently imported on the system being installed. If the name conflicts with an imported disk group the creation of the extra disk group will fail. This is a feature of VxVM to prevent the creation of duplicate disk groups.
Whole Disk Installation Not Supported with VxFS and 18 GB Disks Problem The installation of HP-UX is not supported in the Whole Disk install configuration with VxFS and only disks 18 GB in size. What You See If you attempt a Whole Disk installation of VxFS on 18 GB disks, then the installation is likely to hang at various points during the installation process. What to Do You should avoid installing with VxFS using the whole disk option on any 18 GB disk.
