For the update service, you only get components that change from one release to the next. • HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23) DVD — Contains the HP-UX operating system (OS), operating environments (OEs), required networking software, Update-UX, Ignite-UX, and online diagnostics. • HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23) Applications DVD — Contains HP-UX application software.
• Read Before Installing or Updating to HP-UX 11i Version 2 — Provides last-minute information for HP-UX 11i v2. Read this DVD booklet and the HP-UX 11i Version 2 Installation and Update Guide before cold-installing, updating, or configuring HP-UX. • HP-UX 11i Version 2 Installation and Update Guide — Describes the media kit, and instructions to cold-install or update to the latest release of HP-UX. The guide is also available on the web: http://docs.hp.
New Features and Enhancements The HP-UX 11i v2 release includes the following major features and enhancements: • All Operating Environments: Foundation OE, Enterprise OE, Mission Critical OE, Minimal Technical OE, and Technical Computing OE • Support for 64-way capable, Itanium-based version of Superdome with 64-CPU performance scaling • HP-UX Partition Manager support for HP-UX 11i, Windows, and Linux running in separate partitions • Multi-OS system management for HP-UX, Windows, and Linux running i
• Six more dynamically tunable kernel parameters: dbc_max_pct, dbc_min_pct, nflocks, nfile, maxfiles, and fs_symlinks • nPars (hard partitions) • VxFS/VxVM/CVM 3.5 (Veritas File System, Veritas Volume Manager, Veritas Cluster Manager) with 1024 ACLs (Access Control Lists), 2 terabyte maximum file size, and 4 terabyte maximum file system size. VxFS is the default file system • Performance improvements in Aries dynamic code translator (executes PA-RISC binaries on Itanium systems) versus HP-UX 11i v1.
• Application binary compatibility with previous HP-UX 11i releases for Itanium (HP-UX 11i v1.5 (B.11.20) and HP-UX 11i v1.6 (B.11.22)) • Application source code compatibility with HP-UX 11i v1 on PA-RISC • Dynamic Loader • Interrupt Migration • HP WBEM Services for HP-UX for monitoring and controlling a diverse set of resources • AutoFS+2.
Enabling HP-UX Compressed Dump HP-UX 11i v2 (B.11.23) supports compressed dumps, which significantly speed up memory dump time for HP-UX in the event of a system crash. The initial HP-UX 11i 2 release supports uncompressed dumps by default. To enable (turn on) the compressed dump feature: • Select the compressed dump option within 10 seconds of a system crash. • Turn crashdump compression ON using crashconf(1M).
If you want to turn the compressed dump option ON and have it remain persistent across reboots, you must do the following: 1. Run the following command: % crashconf -t -c ON 2. Modify the /etc/r.config.d/crashconf file. For more information about compressed dumps, see the following: • The crashconf(1M) manpage • HP-UX 11i Version 2 Release Notes • HP-UX 11i Compressed Dump Release Notes Note All of these resources are available on the web: http://docs.hp.
HP-UX 11i v2 Operating System You can install HP-UX 11i v2 with or without an Operating Environment. However, we strongly recommend installing a complete OE.
Note Installing or removing individual products in an OE may lead to dependency issues. For more help on this, see the HP-UX 11i Version 2 Release Notes.
HP-UX 11i v2 Operating Environments Operating Environments are tested and integrated application bundles designed to work with the operating system and provide the functionality needed for your system’s purpose.
extra-cost package containing the Enterprise OE, plus applications such as MC/ServiceGuard and Workload Manager to enable a mission-critical server. This OE is bundled as HPUX11i-OE-MC. • HP-UX 11i v2 Minimal Technical Operating Environment (MTOE) — Designed for workstations running HP-UX 11i v2, this OE is provided at no charge and includes the Mozilla Application Suite, Perl, VxVM, and Judy applications, plus the OpenGL Graphics Developer’s Kit. This OE is bundled as HPUX11i-MTOE.
Reasons to Install an HP-UX 11i OE • You can easily install or update to the latest versions of popular applications in each OE via a single software bundle installed with a single reboot (a second reboot is needed if system firmware needs upgrading). In other words, there is no need to install or update those applications separately. • All applications included in each OE have been thoroughly install-tested on supported systems, ensuring a successful installation on your system.
Known Problems This section contains critical, late-breaking information that was not included in the HP-UX 11i Version 2 Installation and Update Guide. Before cold-installing or updating to HP-UX 11i v2, be sure to read this entire section and Appendix B in the HP-UX 11i Version 2 Installation and Update Guide. For information and patches on other known problems, go to the HP IT Resource Center web site: http://itrc.hp.
System Crash Dump May Fail with Seagate Disk Drives and Specific Adapter Cards Problem In rare cases, a system crash dump may fail when writing to Seagate disk drives connected via a A5149A, A5150A, A6828A, A6829A, A5838A SCSI Host Bus Adaptor, or Ultra2/Ultra160 core I/O card. This issue has only been seen with this configuration.
What to Do To determine if a configuration may have this problem, follow these steps: 1. Determine the dump device and note the device filename. 2. If the dump device is on the LVM/ VxVM, then identify the physical disk. 3. Enter the following command: ioscan Note the dump device filename and follow the I/O path to the I/O controller card that is connected to the dump device.
• Reconfigure dump using an existing, non-Seagate disk drive. • If the system has a SCSI bus that is not claimed by the “c8xx” driver, then reconfigure the dump to use any device on that bus.
Whole Disk Installation Not Supported with VxFS and 18 GB Disks Problem The installation of HP-UX is not supported in the Whole Disk install configuration with VxFS and disks 18 GB in size. What You See If you attempt a Whole Disk installation of VxFS on 18 GB disks, then the installation is likely to hang at various points during the installation process. What to Do You should avoid installing with VxFS using the whole disk option on any 18 GB disk.
Missing USB Device Files Problem You can install HP-UX 11i Version 2 without the need of USB devices. If you require the Common Desktop Environment (CDE) later on the local graphics adapter, then you must connect both the USB keyboard and USB mouse. The first time you attach the USB keyboard and USB mouse to the system, the CDE login manager may encounter difficulty starting the X server due to a lack of USB device files.
The system will also beep once approximately every 2-3 seconds with each failure message. Error messages from the repeated X server failures will cause /var/dt/Xerrors to increase in size. What to Do The simple solution is to attach the USB devices then reboot the system. If a reboot is not convenient, then do the following: 1. Log in remotely. 2. Stop and restart the USB hub daemon using these commands: /sbin/init.d/hubd stop /sbin/init.
Mount/Unmount Performance on Systems with Large Memory Sizes Problem On systems with 16 GB or more of physical memory, mounting and unmounting of file-systems can take a long time. A single mount or unmount may take up to 30 seconds on a 16 GB system. This time increases significantly with increase in memory size. What You See You see long delays during mount, unmount, system startup, and system shutdown.
