Introduction HP-UX has provided single-system management through HP System Administration Manager (SAM), which offers a variety of functional areas to cover different aspects of HP-UX management. After conducting customer surveys at the HP World conference and collecting feedback from customers, HP determined that 80% of HP-UX customers use SAM for local system management. Customer feedback also indicated the desire to have more consistency and common components in the management solutions from HP.

Launch HP SIM on the web browser (Mozilla or Microsoft Internet Explorer) to manage multiple systems remotely. HP SIM is installed on a CMS and uses the Tomcat web server. 2. Launch the HP SMH on the managed node from HP SIM. The HP SMH is installed on the managed node and uses the Apache web server.

Supported user interfaces Most of the HP-UX single-system management plug-ins support the following user interfaces: • Enhanced CLI: Most HP SMH plug-ins have CLIs, which include the following features: – – – – – – – – Efficiency—It wraps complicated command sequences into a single command. • X-Windows GUI: Few HP SMH plug-ins are not web-based and are launched on the X-Windows from HP SMH. For example, Event Monitoring Service (EMS) is not web-based and it launches the tool on the X-Window from the HP SMH. Figure 6.

to minimize errors, with broad terminal-type support and CLI previews that enables system administrators to easily verify system status. • SSL security: The HP SMH uses operating system-based Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and host-based authentication to protect web-based system management tools. The tool provides a secure, encrypted connection between the web browser and the host system.

HP System Management Homepage plug-ins The HP SMH plug-ins are displayed on the Tools page of the HP System Management Homepage. From this page, you can launch various tools to perform system administration tasks on the HP-UX system. Figure 7 displays the snapshot of the HP SMH Tools page. Figure 7.

Accounts for Users and Groups tool GUI Features The Accounts for Users and Groups tool enables you to: • Configure local user accounts: You can add, modify, and delete user accounts on the local HP-UX system. You can also modify password, security attributes, and secondary group information of the local users. • Configure groups: You can add, modify, and delete groups on the local HP-UX system and NIS system. You can also update NIS maps of groups.

Event Subscription Administration and Event Viewer tools Overview Evweb is a user component of System Fault Management (SFM), and it is included in the SysFaultMgmt product. Evweb is comprised of two components: • Event Viewer— This tool, accessible from the HP SMH>Logs>Evweb>Event Viewer page, is used to view information about WBEM indications on the HP-UX 11i v2 system.

Event Subscription Administration tool GUI Features The evweb tool offers the following features for system administrators only: • Subscription administration: – Create, modify, and delete evweb event subscriptions: You can create event subscriptions for the WBEM indications you want to monitor. You can also modify and delete the event subscriptions. You can specify event archive, email address, or both as the event destination.

In an active session, the trace level remains valid until you modify it. • Multisystem event subscriptions: The Distributed Task Facility aspect of HP SIM can be combined with the evweb CLI to create subscriptions across groups of servers.

With these innovations comes the need for a simpler and more comprehensive mechanism to manage kernel configurations. HP-UX 11i v2 offers a new suite of kernel configuration management commands and a new web-based graphical interface that provide unified kernel configuration management.

In addition, the Kernel Configuration tool offers the following features: • The running kernel configuration can be automatically backed up before each configuration change. • The system automatically maintains a detailed log file of all kernel configuration changes.

Features The nPartition Management can: • Dynamically generates graphical representations of hardware components, nPartitions, and available resources of your system. • Help you perform complex configuration tasks without having to remember commands and parameters. You must select nPartitions, cells, I/O chassis, or other components from the graphical display, and select an action from a menu. The actions available from the menu are always appropriate to the current view and the selected objects.

Peripheral Devices tool GUI Features and benefits The Peripheral Devices tool enables you to: • View detailed information about cards, devices, and slots, including all available PCI/OLRAD slots in an easy-to-read format. • Add or replace a card without shutting down the host system. • Create special device files dynamically. • Generate a Critical Resource Analysis report that lists resources lost if a slot is powered down. These resources are grouped according to their impact on the system.

HP-UX Security Attributes Configuration tool Overview The HP-UX Security Attributes Configuration tool (secweb) is introduced in the HP-UX 11i v2 May 2005 update release to perform the following tasks without converting the HP-UX system to the trusted mode: • View and configure system-wide values of security attributes from the System Defaults tab. It has a set of default security values, which can be modified by this tool.

Security Attributes Configuration tool GUI Features The HP-UX Security Attributes Configuration tool enables you to: • Launch the tool from HP SAM, HP SIM, or the HP SMH or by running the secweb command at the HP-UX command line prompt. The secweb tool has a web-based GUI, CLI, and TUI. • Configure system-wide values of security attributes from the System Defaults tab. • Configure per-user values of security attributes of: – Local users from the Local Users tab.

• Offers standard UDP and additional TCP transports • Allows consolidation of arbitrary text based log files • Allows significantly more powerful filtering and log rotation Figure 16. Consolidated logging architecture It is standard feature of the UNIX syslog daemon to be able to forward syslog messages through UDP to a remote log file consolidator or “syslog sink.” There are several issues with this approach. First, it is UDP-based so it is possible to lose messages.
