Adding a Card On-Line
Adding a new card to a slot is a four step process. This action is active only when the selected slot is capable of
a card addition. Before beginning, be sure to familiarize yourself with the OL* concepts in Chapter 1, “PCI
Card OL* Overview and Concepts,” on page 13.
Prerequisites for this procedure:
• Drivers for the card have already been installed.
• There are no drivers associated with the slot.
• The power LED is steady OFF (some platforms may have the empty slot in ON state, use the olrad
command or the pdweb tool to power the slot OFF).
• The Attention LED is steady OFF or is BLINKing (if a user has requested a locate of the slot).
• Refer to the Host Bus Adapter (HBA) documentation for details on card installation.
• You are grounded to the chassis of the unit.
Step 1. Press the latch into the unlocked position (if latch is present),
add the card into the slot,
and press the latch into locked position (if latch is present).
1
CAUTION Working out of sequence, or not completing the actions within each step, could cause
the system to crash. Do not press the Attention Button until the latch is locked.
Step 2. Press the Attention Button.
The power LED will start to BLINK.
Step 3. Wait for the power LED to stop BLINKing

.
Step 4. Check for errors in the hotplugd daemon log file (default: /var/adm/hotplugd.log )
The CRA performed while doing an Attention Button initiated Add action is very restrictive, and the action
will not complete (it will fail) to protect critical resources from being impacted. For finer control over CRA
actions, use pdweb or the olrad command.
