HP CIFS Server
Chapter 6
145
HP CIFS Server
The HP CIFS Server provides file sharing, printer access and authentication services to
CIFS clients including Microsoft Windows NT, XP, and 2000/2003, as well as HP-UX
machines running HP CIFS Client software.
Summary of Change
HP CIFS Server 3.0c (version A.02.01.02) is available on HP-UX 11i v2 December 2005
and is based on Samba 3.0.7. HP CIFS Server A.02.01.02 provides minor enhancements
and bug fixes in addition to the new features provided in HP CIFS Server 3.0a (version
A.02.01).
• HP CIFS Server 3.0a (version A.02.01) was based on Samba 3.0.7 and contained
selected fixes from Samba 3.0.7, including samba-3.0.7-CAN-2004-0930.patch and
samba-3.0.7-CAN-2004-0882.patch security fixes. HP CIFS Server 3.0a (version
A.02.01) provided the following main features:
— Active Directory support: HP CIFS Server can join an Active Directory Server
(ADS) realm as a member server and authenticate users using LDAP with
Kerberos security.
— Backup Domain Controller (BDC) support: Provides the BDC features and
supports BDCs in a domain in which it acts as a Primary Domain Controller
(PDC).
— Modular authentication system support: HP CIFS Server now supports multiple
account storage backend databases including smbpasswd, HP Netscape Directory
Servers (LDAP), and a new tdbsam database. Refer to the Samba Web
Administrator Tool (SWAT) help text for passdb backend or view the smb.conf
manpage for additional information.
1
— Winbind support: Dynamically assigns UNIX users and groups (UID/GIDs) to
Windows users and groups to facilitate integration in Windows-based domains.
— Support for new account management tools: You can use utilities including
pdbedit, net commands, and smbpasswd to manage user account information.
The net commands provide numerous new utility operations and replace others.
For more information on how to use pdbedit and net commands, see the SWAT
help text for pdbedit and net commands.
— Support for three deployment models: Samba Domain Model, Windows Domain
Model and Unified Domain Model are supported. These three models represent
common network environments and demonstrate HP CIFS Server’s flexibility.
— Support for parameters changes in the smb.conf file: There are new parameters
and removed parameters in the smb.conf file for HP CIFS Server A.02.01.
