HP CIFS Client
Chapter 6
143
Obsolescence
Not applicable.
HP CIFS Client
CIFS is the native networking protocol on Microsoft Windows operating systems. The
HP CIFS products for HP-UX provide a wide range of integration strategies for HP-UX
and Windows.
The HP CIFS Client enables the HP-UX host to mount directories shared by remote
CIFS servers (Windows, HP-UX, and other server platforms on which CIFS has been
implemented). The HP CIFS Server enables the HP-UX host to provide access to its own
shared directories by remote CIFS clients (Windows, HP-UX, and other CIFS clients); it
emulates Windows file and print services.
The HP CIFS Client bundle also includes Pluggable Authentication Module - NT LAN
Manager (PAM-NTLM) that allows HP-UX logins to be authenticated by a centralized
service on a CIFS domain.
Summary of Change
HP CIFS Client A.02.01 is available on HP-UX 11i v2 December 2005. HP CIFS Client
A.02.01 is implemented based on a substantially revised and improved codebase. This
release contains the following enhancements and changes:
• Enhanced Security Features
— NTLMv2 Password Encryption
This release of HP CIFS Client supports NTLM version 2 (NTLMv2) in addition
to NTLM and Kerberos. NTLMv2 uses the same challenge-response protocol as
NTLM, but provides more sophisticated encryption algorithms, hence better
password protection.
For details, refer to the configuration parameters ntlmEncryptionVersion and
authenticationMethod in the HP CIFS Client A.02.01 Administrator’s Guide,
available at “I/O Cards and Networking Software” section at
http://www.docs.hp.com.
— Packet Signing
This release supports packet signing. The purpose of CIFS packet signatures is
prevention of man-in-the middle attacks: by requiring a unique signature on
each Server Message Block (SMB) packet, the client and server are mutually
assured of the other’s identity.
Refer to the HP CIFS Client A.02.01 Administrator’s Guide for a detailed
description of the smbPacketSigning parameter.
• Enhanced Name Resolution
— NetBIOS Name Services, WINS and DNS Support
