HP-UX 11i v2 Installation and Update Guide, June 2007
Preparing to Cold-Install or Update to HP-UX 11i v2
Cold-Install Tasks
Chapter 476
Task 2: Backing Up Your Configuration Files
If you plan to cold-install HP-UX 11i v2 on a system that already has
HP-UX installed, make sure to save the files that you want to reinstall,
such as:
• Configuration files in /etc
• The contents of /usr/local
• Any local home directories (that is, those you do not import from
another system)
• Any configuration files located in the /etc/opt directories for
installed software
If multiple users are preparing for the cold-install, you might consider
creating a file system. Mount it with sam. Then create a subdirectory for
each system or user (for example, /backup/your_sys).
As root, copy the files. For example:
1. Copy all config files from /etc on a system named system1 to system
system2. On system2, enter:
mkdir /backup/system1/etc
rcp -p
your_name
@system1:/etc/* /backup/system1/etc/
2. Copy your local home directory to the backup system:
mkdir /backup/system1/home
rcp -pr
your_name
@system1:/home/ /backup/system1/home/
Task 3: Making a Recovery Image of Your System
Any data on the client disks that are used for installation, including the
operating system, are removed entirely as part of this installation
process. Make a recovery image of your system so you can easily restore
it to its original state if a problem occurs. See “Backing Up Your System”
on page 80 for more information.
