Connecting the Fiber Optic Cables
Connecting the Fiber Optic Cables
The cable that you use to connect the Datakit interface board to the VCS
switch must be an AT&T 62.5 micron fiber optic cable with two split-ferrule
straight-tip (ST) connectors on each end.
On each end of the cable, one connector is for the transmit connection and
one is for the receive connection. The positions of the transmit and receive
connections are reversed on the two ends of the cable. The fiber optic cable
is actually made of a pair of fiber-optic strands bound together.
For more information about ordering these cables, refer to the Appendix C,
“Ordering Information”.
The ST Connectors
The ST connectors on the ends of the fiber optic cable consist of a thin
plastic tube that is inserted into the jack of the board, a small inner metal
ring, and a larger outer metal ring. The outer metal ring rotates around the
inner metal ring.
The inner ring of the ST connector has a small nub that fits into a groove on
the right (or left) side of the jack on the edge of the board. Then, the outer
ring has two J-shaped slots that fit around nubs on the top and bottom of the
jack. After you connect both the inner and outer rings, you rotate the outer
ring to the right to lock the connector in place.
Connecting an ST Connector To a Board
1 Hold the connector so that the small nub on the inner ring faces to the right (for
a Datakit interface board) or to the left (for a CPM-HS module).
2 Turn the outer ring so that the J-shaped slots face directly up and down.
3 Slide the connector toward the jack until the small nub on the inner ring fits into
the corresponding groove on the right or left side of the jack.
4 Press the outer ring in until the J-shaped slots fit around the nubs on the top and
bottom of the jack.
5 Rotate the outer ring one-quarter turn to the right to lock the connector in place.
6 Pull on the connector gently. If it is connected correctly, it should not disconnect.
