Configuring and Administering the NFS Automounter
Chapter 262
Configuring and Administering the NFS
Automounter
This section tells you how to configure the NFS automounter. The
automounter mounts directories automatically when users or processes
request access to them, and it unmounts them automatically after they
have been idle for a period of time (five minutes, by default). Following
are the tasks involved in configuring the NFS automounter. Tasks 1 and
14 alone will get the automounter up and running on your system.
Before configuring the automounter, see Deciding Between
Standard-Mounted Directories and Automounted Directories” on
page 37.
The automounter does not support NFS protocol version 3. Automounted
file systems will be mounted with NFS protocol version 2. The following
topics are covered in this section:
1. “To Automount All Exported Directories from Any Host Using the
-hosts Map” on page 63
2. “To Decide Between Direct and Indirect NFS Automounts” on
page 66
3. To Mount a Remote Directory Using a Direct Automounter Map” on
page 68
4. “To Mount a Remote Directory Using an Indirect Automounter Map
on page 72
5. “To Configure Multiple (Replicated) Servers for An Automounter
Directory” on page 76
6. “To Use Environment Variables as Shortcuts in Automounter Maps”
on page 77
7. “To Use Wildcard Characters as Shortcuts in Automounter Maps” on
page 78
8. “To Automount Users’ Home Directories with the -passwd Map” on
page 80
9. “To Automount Users’ Home Directories with Wildcard Characters”
on page 83
