Installing and Configuring DHCPv6 2
Overview
Autoconfiguration
Chapter 110
Autoconfiguration
Autoconfiguration is a mechanism that does not require any manual
intervention to configure a host in a network environment.
Following are the types of autoconfiguration methods:
• Stateless address autoconfiguration
Stateless autoconfiguration does not require a manually configured
server but enables IPv6 hosts to configure their own addresses using
a local IPv6 router. This method is easy to use. However, this
autoconfiguration method lacks network access control capabilities
and manages only addresses. It does not make the optimum use of
the available address space.
• Stateful address autoconfiguration
Stateful autoconfiguration involves a client and a server. An
unconfigured node checks for router advertisements on the network.
If there are no router advertisements on the network, the node
determines that it needs to use DHCPv6 2.001 to configure an
interface.
DHCPv6 2.001 does not require a DHCPv6 2.001 server on each link.
It works across relays.
