Installing and Configuring DHCPv6 2
Overview
DHCPv6 Versus DHCPv4
Chapter 1 3
DHCPv6 Versus DHCPv4
The following lists the differences between DHCPv4 and DHCPv6:
• Unlike DHCPv4, IPv6 address allocation in DHCPv6 is handled
using a message option.
• The message types, such as DHCPDISCOVER and DHCPOFFER
supported by DHCPv4 are removed in DHCPv6. Instead, DHCPv6
servers are located by a client SOLICIT message followed by a server
ADVERTISE message.
NOTE You can use the DHCPv6 protocol for IPv6 address allocation similar to
the DHCPv4 protocol for IPv4 address allocation. To use the IPv6
address allocation, you must install the following DHCPv6 2.001
software available at http://www.software.hp.com.
See “Installation and Migration” on page 19 for more information on
installing DHCPv6 2.001.
