Introduction HP’s Instant Capacity (iCAP) software product provides the ability to instantly increase or decrease computing capacity on cell-based HP enterprise servers. The goal of this white paper is to assist in understanding how iCAP uses codewords to increase or decrease usage rights on an Instant Capacity server. Many examples will be given to illustrate the effect of codewords on the server. This white paper covers codewords for iCAP versions B.06.00 and later.

Temporary Capacity As described in the previous section, iCAP components can be permanently activated by purchasing the corresponding usage rights. Temporary Capacity (TiCAP) allows cores to be temporarily activated if TiCAP has been purchased in advance. TiCAP is sold in quantities of 30 CPU days. After one order of TiCAP has been applied to a system, additional cores can be activated. The iCAP software keeps track of the quantity and time that the cores are activated.

Line-by-line description of the output of icod_stat icod_stat output Description <1> Software Version This field displays the version of the iCAP client software. <2> System ID This field displays the user-specified system identifier that the iCAP system uses when reporting the system state to HP, and when HP refers to this system in correspondence to the system contact. The default value for this field is the hostname of the iCAP system.

<17> Processors that cannot immediately be assigned This field displays the number of unassigned processors (licensed or unlicensed) in the hard partition that are not assigned to the local virtual partition and cannot be instantly assigned. Bound processors at the time the local virtual partition booted, if unbound later, cannot be instantly assigned to the local virtual partition without an intervening reboot (subject to license limitations).

nPar Name <40–44> iCOD Partition Configuration Information This field displays the partition name corresponding to the row of information that is displayed. If the row is the local partition, the word ”local” will follow the partition name. For cells that are not assigned to partitions, “Unassigned Cells” will be displayed. Lines 40–44 display iCAP configuration information for each partition in the complex. nPar ID This field displays the partition number for the row of data.

HP Utility Pricing Solutions Portal When a system is ordered with iCAP components, it comes from the factory with the correct expectedinactive count for each component recorded in non-volatile memory (NVRAM). The iCAP inventory for the system can be displayed by running the icod_stat command. After the system has been delivered and installed, the iCAP inventory can be changed by purchasing either additional iCAP components or usage rights to permanently activate existing iCAP components.

let’s say a new cell board is purchased for a system that contained four cores and 32 GB of memory, and it is desired that two of the four cores would be iCAP. An add-on codeword would be required specifying two cores. After applying the codeword, the output of icod_stat would show that the number of cores without usage rights increased by two. Usage rights for a cell board, two cores, and 32 GB of memory would be available for use.

Effects of applying codewords Codewords are applied with the icod_modify –C command. This command decodes the codeword and makes the appropriate modification to the iCAP inventory for the system. The command only has to be applied once for the entire system. If there are multiple partitions on the system, it doesn’t matter which partition is used to apply the codeword. Following are examples of applying the various types of codewords to a system.

Applying an upgrade codeword In this example, the system begins in the state immediately after an upgrade of the iCAP software from version 5 to version 6 or later. After the software upgrade has been performed, the new icod_stat command recognizes the situation and reports an exception status of “Upgrade codeword needs to be applied”. The software upgrade process requires that an upgrade codeword be retrieved from the HP Utility Pricing Solutions Portal.

Exceptions The following example outputs from the icod_stat command illustrate the various exception status events that might occur. More cells active than expected This system has one cell without usage rights (one iCAP cell). However, there are no inactive cells—all cells have been activated. This exception must be corrected by deactivating one cell board.

More cores active than expected This system has two cores without usage rights. However, there are no cores that are inactive. Also, since this system does not have any available TiCAP, the activation of the cores cannot be covered using TiCAP. More memory active than expected This system has 8 GB of memory without usage rights. However, there is no inactive memory. To correct this exception, 8 GB of memory must be deactivated. Note: To deactivate memory, a cell board that contains the memory must be deactivated. In this instance, a cell board plus its memory would have to be deactivated to have the system be in compliance.

Temporary Capacity expired The TiCAP on this system has expired; there is no more TiCAP available. There are three options: the core that is using TiCAP must be deactivated, additional TiCAP must be purchased and applied to the system, or an RTU must be purchased and applied to the system. Note: If the core is not deactivated, it will continue to consume TiCAP, creating a negative balance.
