Welcome to HP-UX 11i HP-UX 11i delivers new hardware enablement, additional software functionality, and popular HP-UX applications bundled into Operating Environments. HP-UX 11i is the recommended next-level enterprise release for all HP-UX systems currently running HP-UX 10.x or 11.0.
Media Box Contents If you are receiving HP-UX 11i as part of an update service, you will only receive the components that have changed. For new systems, HP-UX 11i media boxes include all media: HP-UX 11i Operating Environment CDs or DVD — contains an Operating Environment, including the HP-UX OS, required networking software and popular applications. Operating Environments are explained later in this booklet. Note With the December 2002 release of HP-UX 11i, MLIB was temporarily removed from the OE media.
Support Plus CD — This CD contains diagnostics and any current HP-UX 11i patch bundles to enable hardware and applications. (Diagnostics are automatically installed as part of the HP-UX 11i OE.) See the Support Plus User Guide which appears on the CD and any readme document supplied with the CD for details. Important: The 11i Quality Pack depot, GOLDQPK11i, on the HP-UX 11i Support Plus CD, includes two quality pack bundles, GOLDAPPS11i, which updates OE applications, and GOLDBASE11i, which updates the OS.

update for this release, available on the HP-UX 11i Instant Information CD and on the Web: http://docs.hp.com/hpux/os/11i/ HP-UX 11i Installation and Update Guide — This book describes installing and updating HP servers and workstations to HP-UX 11i. Configuring HP-UX For Different Languages — This book is provided in localized media kits. The English version of this manual is also on the Instant Information CD. Note Previous updates to 11i contained additional bonus CDs for the HP Application Server.
What’s New in HP-UX 11i The HP-UX 11i March 2003 release delivers these key features (see the HP-UX 11i March 2003 Release Notes update for details on these changes): • Hardware Enablement Patch Bundle (HWEnable11i) updated for current products: A5159A PCI 2-Port FWD SCSI adapter and A5838A PCI 2-Port Ultra2 SCSI with 2-Port LAN adapter; and improved IDE/ATAPI driver for workstation optical (CD/ROM, CD/RW, DVD/ROM) devices. • HP Apache-based Web Server updated to version v.2.0.43.
• TechSysConf bundle updated to version B.11.11.08.xx and TC-OpenSource product updated to version B.11.00.08.xx to incorporate defect fixes. • WebQoS obsoleted and longer delivered on OE and AR media. • HP-UX iSCSI (SCSI over TCP/IP) supported by SAM • HP VERITAS Enterprise Administrator (VEA) launched from SAM • HP MLIB temporarily removed from the TCOE media. TCOE customers can install MLIB from the supplemental HP Math Library (MLIB) CD provided as part of the media kit.
HP-UX Operating System HP-UX 11i can be installed with or without an Operating Environment. However, we strongly recommend installing a complete OE. If you choose to install or update to HP-UX 11i without an OE, a minimum OS installation must include these bundles: HPUXBase, HPUXBaseAux, BUNDLE11i, HWEnable11i, FEATURE11-11 and OnlineDiag.
HP-UX 11i OS Software HP-UX 11i Support Tools Bundle Name OnlineDiag Default Network Drivers: 1 2 Contents/comments See Diagnostics User Guide on the Support Plus CD Other network drivers are selectable during installation. See the HP-UX 11i March 2003 Release Notes available on the Web: http://docs.hp.
3 The 4 BUNDLE11i patch installs required OS patches New for March 2003 Note Installing or removing individual products in an OE may lead to dependency issues. For more help on this, see: http://docs.hp.com/hpux/onlinedocs/os/11i/filesets.
HP-UX 11i Operating Environments (OEs) HP-UX 11i is delivered with bundles of key applications to help you install a complete operating system in a single-pass process.
HP Technical Workstations: • HP-UX 11i Minimal Technical OE — This OE includes the Netscape, NDS, Perl, VxVM, and Judy applications, plus the OpenGL Graphics Developer’s Kit. • HP-UX 11i Technical Computing OE — This OE includes most applications in the HP-UX11i OE plus extensive graphics applications. This OE is also supported on technical servers.
Reasons to Install an HP-UX 11i OE • You can easily install or upgrade to the latest versions of popular applications in each OE via a single software bundle installed with a single reboot (a second reboot is needed if system firmware needs upgrading); in other words, no need to install or update those applications separately. • All applications included in each OE have been thoroughly install-tested on supported systems, ensuring a successful installation on your system.
HP-UX 11i OE Contents Applications included in each HP-UX 11i OE (in addition to the 11i OS software listed in “HP-UX Operating System” on page 11) are listed on the following pages. Other applications that are selectable during installation are also listed. However, to ensure compatibility with other applications, we recommend that you do not de-select applications or patches that are selected by default when installing an OE bundle.

Known Problems and Workarounds This section contains critical, late-breaking information that was not included in Appendix B, “Known Problems and Troubleshooting” in the HP-UX 11i Installation and Update Guide. Before installing or updating to 11i, be sure to read this entire section as well as Appendix B in the HP-UX 11i Installation and Update Guide. For information and patches on other known problems, go to the HP IT Resource Center web site: http://itrc.hp.
Apache May Hang on Reboot after System Update from Golden System Image (GSI) Depot When upgrading from a GSI-installed system containing an OE with HP Apache 2.0, some systems may hang while attempting to shutdown the Apache Web Server. The problem is caused by an obsolete PID from the httpd daemon being copied from the GSI Golden Image Depot to the client system. How Do You Know If This Affects You? You may be affected if you are upgrading from a GSI HP-UX 11.0 Depot containing HP Apache 2.0 to HP-UX 11i.
Client system: • Delete the following file (if present) after installing the GSI Depot and before an update install: /opt/hpapache2/logs/httpd.
Documentation Correction: HP-UX 11i Installation and Update Guide, December 2002 On Page 50 of the December 2002 HP-UX 11i Installation and Update Guide, the firmware version listed in Table 3-2, "Minimum Firmware Versions for HP-UX 11i" for the C3700 is incorrect. The incorrect version stated for the C3700 was 5.0; the correct version number should be 1.9.
System Console "kthread table full" or "fork failed" Messages Note This known problem was previously documented in the Installation and Update Guide. This section includes an addendum to the original instructions whereby the maxusers tunable value may vary on the type of system. After a successful cold install, the system starts displaying console messages such as kthread table full or fork failed console. These messages are logged in /var/adm/syslog.log.
The above example demonstrates table is full messages; however, you might see similar "fork failed" messages. What To Do To correct this increase the maxusers tunable: 1. Log on as root 2. Edit /stand/system and add the following value (depending on your system): • Large 64-way systems (Superdome): maxusers 400 • 16-way systems: maxusers 200 Note 3. Consult your HP Customer Engineer for information and assistance for setting the appropriate values on your system.
