More efficient high availability and resource utilization through manageability

Putting it all together—An example
Integrating the building blocks of the HP Virtual Server Environment provides a seamless solution for
high availability, disaster tolerance, workload management, and Instant Capacity. Consider an
environment with two data centers. Each data center has two HP 9000 rp7420 Servers connected to
an HP StorageWorks XP-series disk array. Each server has two nPartitions. Thus, the environment has
a total of eight nodes. Data is replicated from the first data center to the second one through
Metrocluster with Continuous Access XP (Metrocluster CA XP). The first data center is located in San
Francisco, CA and is running mission-critical SAP applications. Fifty miles away in San Jose, CA,
there is a second data center with systems running less critical applications. The systems in the second
data center are also configured to run the mission-critical applications if necessary. The data centers
are clustered together and managed through Serviceguard and Metrocluster. Upon failure,
applications in the first data center are configured to automatically migrate among systems in the
same data center if there is a system in that data center available to run the application and to
automatically migrate to the remote data center if no local system is available (such as the loss of the
entire data center).
