installed is just a fraction of its regular purchase price, and when the remainder of the regular
purchase price is paid, the reserve capacity can be activated.
Other major benefits of using the Instant Capacity program are summarized in Table 1.
Table 1. Features and benefits of Instant Capacity
Feature/function Customer benefit
Ability to install reserve capacity at a fraction of its purchase
price in anticipation of future requirements
Simplifies capacity planning
Ability to dial up (and down) processor cores using HP
Temporary Instant Capacity
Meets periodic or unforeseen temporary spikes in workload
Minimal cost for resources until they are used Links IT costs to revenue
Ability to move RTUs from a partition in one server to
another partition in the same server or to a partition in
another server
Creates low-cost backup servers, performs workload
balancing among partitions and servers, and pools TiCAP
balances
Reduced downtime, risks, and hassles of having to order,
install, and reboot when adding resources
Minimizes operational impact
Dynamic replacement of processors in event of failure Increases system availability
No price premium Takes advantage of future technology price decreases to
deliver superior value
Integrated with the HP Virtual Server Environment Provides automatic dynamic reconfiguration within a
complex to meet changing service level agreement (SLA)
requirements
Types of HP Instant Capacity
HP offers three types of Instant Capacity:
• Instant Capacity for processors, cell boards, and memory
• HP Temporary Instant Capacity (TiCAP)
• HP Global Instant Capacity (GiCAP)
HP Instant Capacity
Deploy a fully loaded server, yet pay for only the components you plan to use on day one and just a
fraction of the regular purchase price for the reserve components. In this two-step purchase model,
you can purchase and install reserve system capacity—inactive but ready for use—in a system at a
fraction of its regular price. Then, when the reserve capacity is needed, you can purchase permanent
activation for the remainder of the regular purchase price.
iCAP cell boards are purchased and installed with iCAP processors and iCAP memory. When the cell
board is activated (by purchasing the appropriate RTUs), all of the memory on the cell board must be
activated at the same time and there must be at least one active processor on the cell board.
The need for at least one active processor per cell board might not require that additional processors
be purchased. If there are sufficient active processors in the partition, the iCAP software automatically
distributes these active processors across all active cell boards. Therefore, purchasing an additional
processor activation is only necessary if the total number of active processors in the partition is less
than the total number of active cell boards in the partition.
