Executive summary
HP Instant Capacity (iCAP) provides the capability to quickly add processor, memory, and cell board
capacity when needed while paying only a fraction of the cost for it until it is used.
HP Temporary Instant Capacity (TiCAP) provides pre-purchased processing time which can be used to
turn processor cores on and off as needed.
HP Global Instant Capacity (GiCAP) allows customers to share Instant Capacity usage rights among a
group of servers, enabling more cost-effective high-availability servers, more efficient use of data
center resources, and more flexibility in resource utilization.
Together, Instant Capacity, Temporary Instant Capacity, and Global Instant Capacity enhance system
agility and flexibility to support the Adaptive Enterprise.
Scope
This paper describes the HP Instant Capacity program for HP Integrity and HP 9000 servers. It
provides an overview of the Instant Capacity offerings and describes how the program works.
A successful Instant Capacity implementation involves both technology and operations. In addition to
the product offerings, the paper discusses organizational and functional issues that will assist in
ensuring a successful Instant Capacity implementation.
HP Pay per use and the Instant Capacity programs for HP ProLiant, HP Alpha, HP NonStop, blades,
or HP StorageWorks products are beyond the scope of this paper and are not covered here.
HP Instant Capacity terminology
Term Definition
codeword A data string obtained from the HP Utility Pricing Solutions portal that alters the Instant
Capacity information on the Instant Capacity server.
Global Instant Capacity
(GiCAP)
Right to share iCAP usage rights among servers.
iCAP component A processor or cell board with memory that is physically installed in an iCAP system but is
not activated for use (sometimes called an inactive iCAP component).
iCAP software Software integrated in the HP-UX Operating Environment that provides the means to
monitor and manage the use of Instant Capacity components.
iCAP server An HP Integrity or HP 9000 server that contains inactivated Instant Capacity components.
Instant Access Capacity (IAC) Free iCAP capacity available with the purchase of iCAP processors.
Right-To-Use (RTU) Permission granted to the user to obtain a codeword to activate iCAP components. The
amount paid for the RTU is called the “activation fee” or “enablement fee.”
Temporary Instant Capacity
(TiCAP)
Right to use iCAP processors on a temporary basis.
Utility Pricing Solutions portal The HP website, http://www.hp.com/go/icap/portal, used to administer Instant Capacity
and issue codewords.
