Adding HP Temporary Instant Capacity to an HP Instant Capacity system
1. If TiCAP processors are not installed on the system, order the appropriate quantity of iCAP
processors. To use TiCAP, a system must have iCAP processors installed.
2. Order the appropriate quantity of temporary capacity.
3. After the order is processed by HP, obtain the codeword from the Utility Pricing Solutions portal.
4. Apply the codeword to the system..
TiCAP and IAC do not expire. They can be applied to the system and remain available and will not
become inactive or out of date before they are used. When the additional processor capacity is
required:
1. Activate the iCAP components.
2. Order the necessary HP and third-party software license upgrades that might be required for the
additional active processor cores.
Deactivating processors
Processors that have been activated with TiCAP can be deactivated with the icod_modify –d
command when they are no longer needed.
If the balance of temporary capacity becomes zero, the iCAP processors are not automatically
deactivated. Instead, the iCAP software calculates when the balance will expire based on the current
consumption rate. When the balance reaches a residual of 15 days or less (this parameter can be set
by the user), an e-mail message is automatically sent to the Instant Capacity system manager, if
specified, and the root system manager. When the e-mail is received, customers must do one of the
following:
Purchase additional temporary capacity.
Deactivate processors until the number of inactive processors in the system matches the expected
number of iCAP processors reported by icod_stat.
Purchase and apply the permanent RTUs for the number of processors currently consuming
temporary capacity.
If the temporary capacity usage goes beyond the allotted time and creates a negative balance, then
when additional temporary capacity is purchased, the negative balance is subtracted from the 30
processing days of the newly installed temporary capacity.
Monitoring instant access and temporary capacity usage
You can use the icod_stat command to obtain useful information regarding TiCAP usage, including:
The amount of instant access and temporary capacity remaining in days, hours, and minutes
The number of processors using IAC and TiCAP
The projected temporary capacity expiration time and date based on the current consumption rate,
which can help you plan for renewal of the TiCAP or the permanent activation of the processors
NOTE
For users who do not have root access to the server, the iCAP portal
provides the amount of temporary capacity remaining if the system is
configured to report to HP by e-mail.
