Executive summary HP Instant Capacity (iCAP) provides the capability to quickly add processor, memory, and cell board capacity when needed while paying only a fraction of the cost for it until it is used. HP Temporary Instant Capacity (TiCAP) provides pre-purchased processing time which can be used to turn processor cores on and off as needed.

HP Temporary Instant Capacity TiCAP is a prepaid block of processing time that allows iCAP processors to be turned on and off. This capability is available for processors only, not for cell boards or memory. TiCAP can be used on any system that contains iCAP processors by ordering the appropriate TiCAP. TiCAP is purchased as a 30 processing-day block, which provides 43,200 minutes of actual activation time per core.

HP Global Instant Capacity GiCAP extends the value of Instant Capacity by allowing usage rights for iCAP components to be moved among a group of servers.

Using HP Instant Capacity As mentioned in the previous sections, acquiring and using iCAP resources is a two-step process, whereby an iCAP system is purchased and installed or a regular system is upgraded with iCAP components. In either case, the iCAP resources are on-site—in the user’s system—inactive, but ready for use. When the iCAP resources are needed, the appropriate RTUs are purchased and the components are activated.

System and application software licenses Some HP software products, such as HP-UX and HP Serviceguard, and many third-party software products, such as Oracle® Database, are licensed based on the number of processors installed in the system. Most major software vendors are changing their licensing models to accommodate the current trend toward dynamic changes in system resources.

Configuring servers with multiple partitions When creating a new partition in an iCAP system, the partition being created must have active (that is, non-iCAP) components only. The system as a whole must have enough RTUs for all components to be active, or iCAP components must be moved to current partitions before creating a new one. After the partition is created and the OE, along with the iCAP software, is loaded, then iCAP components can be redistributed into the newly created partition.

Acquiring HP Instant Capacity resources iCAP components can be acquired as part of the initial system purchase, added to an iCAP system (a server that was ordered and installed with iCAP components), or added to a non-iCAP system (a server that was ordered and installed with no iCAP components). Activating HP Instant Capacity resources The second step of the Instant Capacity acquisition and use process is the activation of the iCAP components. This chapter discusses the permanent activation process. See the “Temporarily activating and deactivating HP Instant Capacity processors with HP Temporary Instant Capacity or HP Instant Access Capacity” section on page 18 for information on the process for temporary activation. Activating multiple core processors Instant Capacity multiple core processors such as the PA-8900 dual processors (as well as multiple processor modules such as the Intel® Itanium®-based mx2) are activated on a single-core basis. Create codewords As seen in Figure 6, this link provides a choice of the type of codeword needed, including a TiCAP codeword, a permanent RTU codeword, an iCAP software upgrade codeword, and a codeword to create a non-iCAP system. List codewords This link provides a list of all the codewords that have been created for a specified system serial number. It also indicates if no codewords have been created. Other supported activities The Utility Pricing Solutions portal also reports the amount of temporary capacity (in processing days) remaining as of the last e-mail message sent to HP. This information can also be obtained on the system using the icod_stat command.

Temporarily activating and deactivating HP Instant Capacity processors with HP Temporary Instant Capacity or HP Instant Access Capacity After purchasing and installing iCAP processors, five processing days of HP Instant Access Capacity (IAC) are provided for each core acquired. To access this capacity, use the same process to acquire and apply a codeword as for TiCAP as described in the following section.

Adding HP Temporary Instant Capacity to an HP Instant Capacity system 1. If TiCAP processors are not installed on the system, order the appropriate quantity of iCAP processors. To use TiCAP, a system must have iCAP processors installed. 2. Order the appropriate quantity of temporary capacity. 3. After the order is processed by HP, obtain the codeword from the Utility Pricing Solutions portal. 4. Apply the codeword to the system.. TiCAP and IAC do not expire.

Sharing usage rights Usage rights can be shared among servers using HP Global Instant Capacity (GiCAP). GiCAP operation is built on the concept of a collection of HP Integrity and HP 9000 servers, called a GiCAP group, within which users can share usage rights for iCAP processors, cell boards with memory, and Temporary Instant Capacity for iCAP processor cores. GiCAP is part of iCAP 8 software and is installed, but not enabled, on every HP-UX system with iCAP 8.
