Installing HP Distributed Print Service
Calculating the Memory and Disk Space Requirements
The HPDPS components are installed in the /opt/pd file system.
A /var/opt/pd file system is also created for spooling purposes. It also
contains the printer configuration database. This database contains the
current print environment print configuration.
Disk Space Required for Spooling
Calculate the amount of disk space required for spooling based on the
needs of your environment. Consider the following factors:
• The number of print jobs that will reside in a supervisor or a HPDPS
client simultaneously.
For supervisors, assume there will be several jobs in the
"pre-processing" state for each printer. For HPDPS clients, a job
resides in the client's spooling space from the time it is submitted
until it has finished printing.
• The average size of each job.
• The amount of spooling space required for logging functions.
The default value is 2MB, but you can change this value using the
HPDPS log configuration files. See “Changing Server Error Log
Attribute Values” in Chapter 12 for information on how to change the
default.
Calculate the spooling space requirement as follows:
Spooling space = 2MB + ((# of jobs) x (average file size in MB))
For example, if you typically have 50 jobs being processed by an HPDPS
client, and each one is approximately 0.2MB, calculate the spooling space
as follows:
Spooling space = 2MB + (50 x 0.2MB) = 12MB
Spooler only 12MB
Supervisor only 12MB
