HP Hotkey Filter Administrator Guide
1 Getting started
HP Hotkey Filter is a security utility for Windows
®
-based HP thin clients. In many thin client
deployments, access to the local Windows desktop and the local Windows file system is not
necessary and might be undesirable.
This utility allows a user to lock and unlock their remote desktop session without affecting the local
Windows instance. This can be used to simplify deployment.
HP Hotkey Filter is designed to work with shell-replacement software packages like HP ThinShell. It
provides the administrator with an easy way to “lock down” the keyboard in a Kiosk Mode
deployment. This prevents users from accessing the local computer's security options that are
normally available through the Ctrl+Alt+Del hotkey sequence. Administrator accounts are unaffected
by the hotkey filter.
HP Hotkey Filter is configured by default to translate the Ctrl+Alt+Del sequence into the appropriate
default keyboard sequence for the remote desktop client in use. The sequence is then forwarded and
displays the Windows security screen on the remote computer instead of the local computer.
For example, the default hotkey sequence used to display the Windows security screen when using
Microsoft
®
Remote Desktop Connection (RDC) is Ctrl+Alt+End. By default, HP Hotkey Filter sends a
Ctrl+Alt+End sequence to the remote computer when a Ctrl+Alt+Del sequence is detected on the
local computer.
