4 Setting up and configuring managed systems
At this point, steps 1 and 2 below are complete. Perform step 3 to install and configure the required
management software.
1. Install and configure the CMS. See Chapter 2 “Installing Systems Insight Manager on the CMS for the
first time”.
2. Configure Systems Insight Manager for your environment. See Chapter 3 “Configuring Systems Insight
Manager”.
IMPORTANT: You must run Discovery before setting up managed systems. See Configuring Systems
Insight Manager. Configuring Automatic Discovery is part of the First Time Wizard.
3. Install and configure the required management software on the systems that will be managed by the
CMS. The procedure to complete this step is in this chapter.
4. Configure the remaining protocols for the managed systems. The procedure to complete this step is in
this chapter.
Overview
Setting up managed systems involves installing the required management software. The management software
being installed depends on the type of managed system, for:

Setting up managed systems using the Systems Insight Manager interface
The Managed System Setup Wizard and Configure or Repair Agents tools, enable you to configure your
managed systems by installing agents, applying licenses, and exectuting configuration steps. To run these
tools against multiple systems simultaneously, you must have authorizations to run the Managed System
Setup Wizard and Configure or Repair Agents tools. You must have full CMS configuration privileges to
modify the Systems Insight Manager community strings in the node security file. In addition, you must enter
root or administrator level user credentials for the target system.
To run Configure or Repair Agents, select ConfigureConfigure or Repair Agents.
To run the Managed System Setup Wizard, select ConfigureManaged System Setup Wizard.
NOTE: If you want the menu item ConfigureManaged System Setup Wizard... to be enabled in
the Systems Insight Manager menu, you must select the Managed System Setup Wizard to be installed
through the Insight Software DVD. This menu item is not standard with the standalone Systems Insight
Manager install.

Setting up managed storage systems
Storage Management Initiative Specification
(SMI-S) is a Storage Networking Industry Association (SNIA)
standard that enables interoperable management for storage networks and storage devices. Systems Insight
Manager uses this standard to discover and manage the
storage systems
it supports.
