LTO Tape Drive Installation Instruction

Note: These instructions apply to both the LTO-LVD (A6322A) and the

LTO-HVD (A6323A) drives.

CAUTION: Remote resolution must be attempted for servicing, adjustment,

maintenance, or repairs prior to authorization of on-site service.

Note to Customer Engineer: This installation may add new technology to

the library that older user’s guides do not address. Please remind the

customer that the latest user documentation is available from the HP

Customer Care website: http://www.hp.com/go/support.

• Confirm with the customer System Administrator that the tape library can be

powered off.

• Observe proper power off and power on procedures, as described in the

installation or service manuals.

• When you install a LTO tape drive, remove the product ID label located on

the drive and place it in the appropriate box on the drive location label. The

drive location label is located on the inside of the library door, just below

the UL label.

■ Tape Library Attachment Perform these procedures to install a LTO drive into the tape library: ❑ Install the drive(s) in the library. ❑ Attach the Y-cable between the drive and the library bulkhead. ❑ Attach the interface cable to the drive. ❑ Power-on the drive. ❑ Configure the LTO drive. ❑ Attach the SCSI terminator. ❑ Attach the interface cable to the host.

■ Library Drive Attachment Tape drives are shipped individually. Due to the size differences of the LTO, DLT and 9840 drives, there are a variety of ways of installing the drives. Typically, drive installation moves from the bottom slot and up. Refer to figure 1 and the explanation below for the configuration rules for installing drives. 1. The first callout in Figure 1 shows that the uppermost drive slot in the drive column can only be a DLT or LTO drive. 2.

■ Installing the LTO Drives Use the following procedure to unpack and install the drives. LTO tape drives are shipped with the following, non-selectable configurations: • Low voltage differential or high voltage differential operation Note: Refer to Figure 2 and make sure that the labels on the drive match the drive type and operation required. Note: Refer to Figure 3 for the following procedure. 1. Open the drive access section of the 20/700 tape library (at the right side, as viewed from the front of the library) by lifting up on the two latches. Turn the latches counterclockwise and open the side door. On the 10/180 tape library pull open the outer door and then unlatch the seven latches on the inside door to get to the drive access section of the tape library. The latches on both tape libraries can be unlatched as follows: a.

■ Installing the LTO Cable Connectors The following procedures describe how to install the tape channel connectors for the tape drives. Standard Drive Column 0 Connectors Note: Drive Column 0 is the standard drive column included in all libraries. It is the column that contains the calibration label at the bottom. Some of the following steps may require two people. Refer to Figure 4 for orientation in the following steps. 1. Go to the rear of the library, open the door, and locate the connector bulkhead.

Figure 4. Tape Drive Cable Connectors 4. Insert the two 68-pin, Y-cable connectors into the bulkhead slots adjacent to the drive (make sure that the jack is at the bottom). Note: It is easier to insert the connector if you tilt it away from the bulkhead. 5. Grasp the connector and thread the second jack screw into the top connector. 6. Make sure the connector aligns inside its slot, and tighten both jack screws with a 3/16inch nut driver. Do not overtighten.

7. Repeat Steps 5 and 6 for the second Y-cable connector. 8. Insert the single connector end into the LTO drive. 9. Repeat Steps 1 through 8 for all drives in Column 0. 10. Close the rear door(s). Optional Drive Column 1 Connectors Note: This section applies to the 20/700 tape library only. 1. Locate and open the small access door (located on the frame member between the two drive columns) for the Column 1 drive connectors by turning the five snap rings counterclockwise. a.

■ Installing the Host Interface Cables Note: Term Power is not supplied by the LTO tape drive; it must be supplied by the Host Bus Adapter card. To Install SCSI Cables: On the 20/700 tape library, go to the right front door; on the 10/180 tape library, go to the rear doors. The LTO tape drive connects to a SCSI bus and supports both the low voltage and the high voltage differential alternative.

3. Route the cable for the first drive through the cutout in the library floor. Note: Use the figure to the right for an example. Although the figure shows Column 1 locations, the locations for Column 0 are very similar. CAUTION: Connector damage. Be careful not to bend or damage the pins or connectors when connecting the cable to the drive or SCSI bulkhead. 4. Connect the cable to a 68-pin jack on the library bulkhead. Note: If you are attaching to a 50-pin SCSI bus, an adapter is required. 5.

■ Applying Power to the Drive To apply power to the LTO tape drive, follow these steps: 1. When you are finished installing all drives, place the LTO drive power switch to the on (|) position for each drive. 2. Set the library power switch to the ON position. 3. Verify that all drives power on (you should feel air flowing from the fan). ■ SCSI Drive Connections For SCSI operation, make sure that you comply with the length restrictions for your channel type.

■ Turning the System Over to the Customer After the LTO drive has been installed, it is time to turn the system over to the customer. Follow these steps: 1. Place the drive online (see Chapter 6 of the installation manual). 2. Return to the library installation manual and complete the library installation, if applicable. Note: The library configuration must be updated to identify LTO drives, and cartridge arrays may need to be installed. 3. Provide the operator with training on the LTO drive. 4.
