available for immediate use. File systems on LUNs assigned to UNIX systems are also
immediately available for use after the IT manager mounts the volumes.
No Single Points of Failure
The SAN Manager LM software architecture has no single points of failure; therefore,
introducing it into a system will not compromise availability. The SAN configuration
database can be mirrored three ways to ensure that a copy will always be available. Each
host accesses the database independently, eliminating run-time interdependencies
between hosts. Since hosts are independent, no communications take place over the
messaging network (like ethernet) unless the IT manager is reconfiguring a SAN. Hence, a
host can still boot and access all of its assigned storage even if it has temporarily lost the
messaging network connection.
Summary of Features and Benefits
Feature Benefit
LUN level storage
assignment
Optimizes storage utilization by enabling any LUN to be assigned to any
host
Storage security Prevents data loss and unauthorized access by controlling which hosts
can access specific storage devices
Highly scalable Simplifies administration because one software solution may be used in a
wide range of configurations
Add/remove/assign
storage without host
reboots
Allows administrators to assign storage whenever it is needed without
interrupting host operation, which increases overall system availability
No single point of
failure
System availability is maintained by the highly available mirrored SAN
configuration database that is accessed independently by hosts.
Automated storage
network discovery
Automatically populating the configuration database with host and storage
device information dramatically reduces configuration time and eliminates
a major source of errors.
Intuitive graphical
user interface
Using familiar techniques like drag-and-drop and powerful controls like
view filters maximizes productivity and minimizes training time.
