HP SureStore E SAN Manager LUN Management Administrator's Guide
136 Storage Management
Storage Management
Since SAN Manager LM storage is managed at the device (LUN) level, the application
supports any partitioning format. You can partition and format devices before or after
adding them to the SAN.
When partitioning devices for use with SAN Manager LM, consider the following:
• To partition and format devices with standard partitioning utilities, first assign them to
the host you will use for partitioning and formatting.
• To partition devices with SAN Manager LM’s partitioning utility, the devices must be
unassigned.
• Database devices must be partitioned with SAN Manager LM’s partitioning utility.
• The recommended size for database partitions is 400 megabytes.
• You cannot have more than three database partitions at one time.
• To prevent wasted disk space on a database device, SAN Manager LM allows you to
partition and use the leftover disk space. Database devices are presented as SAN
Manager LM devices that can be assigned to SAN Manager LM hosts. When a database
device is assigned to a host, the database partition is hidden, but all file system
partitions are available.
• If a device that contains a database partition has a free space partition on it, the free
space partition will not be available when the device is assigned to a SAN Manager LM
host. To make the partition available, use SAN Manager LM’s partitioning utility to
change it into a file system partition. To change a partition’s type, follow the instruction
on page 144.
