If you create the volume from... Then...
Unconfigured Capacity You must first define the volume group, specifying two parameters: RAID
level and capacity (how large you want the volume group to be, that is,
how many drives you want to be included in the volume group).
The second step is to specify the volume parameters (volume name,
expected usage, desired capacity, controller ownership, and storage
partition mapping preference).
The expected usage parameter is a convenient way of selecting an
optimal segment size for the application that will use this storage
volume. Selecting either file system, database, or multimedia and then
selecting Based on Expected Usage for segment size allows you to
optimize the segment size without knowing what specific segment size
value to set.
Free Capacity Because free capacity only resides on an existing volume group, the
overall capacity (that is, the number of drives) and RAID level have
already been specified.
Therefore, the only step that is required is to specify the parameters
(volume name, usage, desired capacity, controller ownership, and
Storage Partition Mapping Preference).
Note: You can add free capacity to a volume group using the
9ROXPH *URXS !! $GG )UHH &DSDFLW\ option.
