FIBRE CHANNEL
SERVICES
Fibre Channel services provide a set of functions, some of which are
required by Fibre Channel protocols and some of which provide
optional enhancements to Fibre Channel’s basic protocols. Services
are typically found in switched topologies, and their functions are
outlined in Table 7.1.

Fibre Channel sta-

Multiple switches
linked together form a
fabric. The server func-
tions may be central-
ized on a single switch
in a fabric or distributed
over all the switches in
the fabric.
Each server is associated with a well-known, fabric-wide, unique
address reserved by Fibre Channel. While the servers appear as N_Port
addresses, they may be implemented internal to a fabric. The protocol
for all services is the Fibre Channel common transport protocol (FC-
CT), which is transparent to the fabric type or topology. The servers
support all classes of service.
