Upgrading a VA 7100/7400

to a VA 7410/7110

This document describes the steps involved in upgrading a VA 7100 or

VA 7400 array to a VA 7410 or VA 7110 array. This procedure should only

be performed by HP service trained personnel.

Caution All upgrades to a VA 7410/7110 require a full back up of all

data. The array is reformatted during the upgrade, which will

destroy all data on the array. It is the customer’s responsibility to

ensure that all data on the array is backed up before the

upgrade is performed.

The upgrade procedure involves the following steps:

1 Backup all data on the array.

2 Gather array configuration information.

3 Upgrade disk firmware if necessary.

4 Power down the array.

5 Upgrade the array hardware.

6 Configure the upgraded array.

7 Create the LUN configuration.

8 Use previously saved data to recreate the host port behavior table and the

Secure Manager table.

9 Restore all data to the array.

Preparing for the Upgrade Gather the Required Hardware Components The following hardware components are required when upgrading the array. Before beginning the upgrade, make sure all necessary components are available. The parts involved in the upgrade will vary depending on the magnitude of the upgrade.

The upgrade process involves formatting the array, which will destroy all data. It is the customer’s responsibility to backup all data on the array.

Upgrading the Array Hardware Upgrading the original array to a VA 7410/7110 involves replacing controllers and LCCs on the original array. The procedure may also involve adding new disk enclosures if the array capacity is being increased. Note Make sure you have a copy of the HP StorageWorks Virtual Array User and Service Guide available. The detailed steps for the procedures involved are covered in this book and are not duplicated here.

Replace the Disk Enclosure LCCs If the original VA 7400 array included DS 2400 disk enclosures, the LCCs must be replaced with DS 2405 LCCs. 1 Remove both LCCs from the disk enclosure. 2 Install the DS 2405 LCCs in the disk enclosure. Set FC Loop Speed Switch (Upgrading a VA 7400 with DS 2405 Disk Systems) When upgrading a VA 7400 that includes DS 2405 Disk Systems, the FC Loop Speed switch on the disk enclosure LCCs must be set to 2GB/s.

Configuring the Upgraded VA 7410/7110 Array The process of configuring the upgraded VA 7110/7410 is the same process used for installing a new array. Go to the HP StorageWorks Virtual Array Installation Guide and perform step 3 through step 19. Any differences in the steps when performing the upgrade are identified below. Note The step numbers in this section refer to the corresponding step numbers in the HP StorageWorks Virtual Array Installation Guide. Step 6.

Step 12. Format the array controller enclosure Skip this step because the array has already been formatted. Step 19. Build the Host Port Behavior Table The host port behavior table is stored on the array mid-plane and it should not be necessary to recreate the table. However, it is recommended that you read the table from the array and check it to make sure it contains the proper entries.

Returning Replaced Controllers All controllers replaced during the upgrade should be returned to HP. The standard process for returning exchange hardware assemblies should be used.
