HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System Installation and Upgrade Guide Version 2.2

5 Configuring the storage
NOTE: If your HP SFS system was installed at the factory, the storage will have been configured (in a
standard configuration) and you may not need to perform any of the tasks described in this chapter.
However, this chapter contains information on storage concepts and parameters that you may find useful
when operating your system.
Before you install your HP SFS system, you must plan how the storage will be used; in the case of the
EVA4000 storage arrays, you must also configure the storage arrays to a point where they can be used by
the servers in the system. SFS20 arrays are automatically detected by the servers and do not need to be
preconfigured.
The administration and MDS server pair in an HP SFS system must be connected to either (at least) one
EVA4000 storage array or two SFS20 arrays to provide high availability and to preserve critical meta-data
integrity. Object Storage Servers can be connected either to two EVA4000 arrays, or to up to eight SFS20
arrays.
This chapter describes how to organize and configure the storage arrays for your HP SFS system, and
contains the following sections:
EVA4000 storage — overview and planning (Section 5.1)
Configuring EVA4000 storage (Section 5.2)
SFS20 storage — overview and planning (Section 5.3)
Configuring SFS20 storage (Section 5.4)
MDS LUN sizing guide (Section 5.5)
