HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System Installation and Upgrade Guide Version 2.2

Preparing for the installation2–26
2.6 Planning the management network IP addresses
NOTE: Use the worksheet in Table B-6 in Appendix B to record the information you gather in this section.
The management network is a dedicated, private network that connects all servers in the HP SFS system. As
the network is a private network and is not connected to any other network, you usually do not need to
change the system default configuration.
The default management network configuration in the HP SFS is as follows:
NIC 1, seen as eth0 from Linux, is used to connect to the management network.
The IP address associated with the management network for each server in the system is determined
by using the management network IP address of the administration server as the starting address, and
then incrementing the address by one for each subsequent server.
NIC 1 of each server has an IP address of 192.168.8.n, where n is 1 for the first server, 2 for the
second server, and so on.
The netmask of the management network is 255.255.0.0.
The Integrated Lights Out (iLO) component in each server is assigned an IP address of
192.168.16.n, where n is 1 for the first server, 2 for the second, and so on.
NOTE: In HP SFS Version 2.2, the iLO IP addresses must be manually configured on each server.
You assign the IP addresses when you configure the servers before installing them. For more
information, see Section 6.4 or Section 7.2 (depending on the type of storage used).
The IP address 192.168.0.1 is used by the HP SFS software as an IP alias for management
functions.
HP recommends that you accept the default values that are suggested when you are installing the servers.
Possible reasons for changing these defaults are as follows:
The 192.168/32 address range is used on your site network or the Gigabit Ethernet interconnect. In
this case, you must change the management network IP addresses so that there is no conflict. Use one
of the reserved IP addresses. For example, 10.0.16.1 would be a good alternative address for NIC
1 of the first server.
The server numbers in the HP SFS system do not start at 1. This does not necessarily mean that you
must change the defaults; for example, if the first server is south12, you can keep the defaults if you
wish. However, this means that the IP address of NIC 1 of the south12 server is 192.168.8.1,
NIC 1 on south13 is 192.168.8.2, and so on. This may lead to confusion, and you may find it
more convenient to change the default start IP address so that the IP address of south12 is
192.168.8.12.
If none of these reasons for changing the defaults applies, HP recommends that you do not change the
default addresses on the management network.
The management network information is entered at the Management Network menu during installation
(see Section 6.8.4 or Section 7.4.4, depending on the type of storage used).
2.7 Planning iLO access
When you configure the servers before installing the HP SFS software, you will need to configure a common
iLO user name and password on all of the servers. HP recommends that you accept the (default)
Administrator user name. Determine the password that will be used, and record it in the worksheet
provided in Table B-6 in Appendix B. The iLO user name and password are entered at the iLO Access menu
during installation (see Section 6.8.5 or Section 7.4.5, depending on the type of storage used).
