HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System Installation and Upgrade Guide Version 2.2

Preparing for the installation2–4
If your system is using a Quadrics interconnect, perform the following tasks:
1. Assign ports on the Quadrics interconnect (see Section 2.4.4).
2. Determine the Quadrics machine ID (see Section 2.4.5).
If your system is using a Myrinet interconnect, assign ports on the Myrinet interconnect (see
Section 2.4.6).
The Configure Networks menu is used to access the menus for entering network information during
installation (see Section 6.8.2 or Section 7.4.2, depending on the type of storage used).
2.4.1 Site, interconnect, and management network configurations
On the server types supported for use in HP SFS Version 2.2, there are two network interface card ports
(NIC 1 and NIC 2), allowing two Ethernet connections.
Each server also has a number of PCI slots (there are two such slots on ProLiant DL360 servers, and three
on ProLiant DL380 servers).
NOTE: The first PCI slot on a ProLiant DL360 server is the left-most slot when looking at the rear of the
server.
The first PCI slot on a ProLiant DL380 server is the bottom slot when looking at the rear of the server.
See Figure 1-14 and Figure 1-15 for illustrations of the HP ProLiant DL360 G4 and the HP ProLiant DL380
G4 servers.
All of the servers in the HP SFS system are connected to the management network and to the interconnect.
The administration server and the MDS server are connected to the site network in addition to being
connected to the management network and the interconnect.
The configuration rules for network connections are as follows:
If a single Gigabit Ethernet interconnect is the sole interconnect, the Gigabit Ethernet interconnect
must use the built-in NIC 2 port on the server, regardless of whether the server is an MDS or
administration server, or an Object Storage Server.
If a Quadrics, Myrinet, Voltaire InfiniBand, or a dual or bonded Gigabit Ethernet interconnect is used,
the interconnect adapter must occupy the first PCI slot of a ProLiant DL360 or ProLiant DL380 server,
regardless of whether the server is an MDS or administration server, or an Object Storage Server.
NOTE: A single Dual Port PCI-X Gigabit Ethernet adapter is used for dual and bonded Gigabit
Ethernet interconnects.
If a Quadrics, Myrinet, or Voltaire InfiniBand interconnect is used, it is permissible to also have a
single Gigabit Ethernet interconnect. In this case, the Gigabit Ethernet interconnect must use the built-
in NIC 2 port on the server, regardless of whether the server is an MDS or administration server, or
an Object Storage Server.
When a dual or a bonded Gigabit Ethernet interconnect is used, it is permissible to use NIC 2 of the
administration server and the MDS server for the connection to the site network.
By default, regardless of slot assignments, the site connection on the MDS server and the
administration server is through the NIC 2 port.
If you have a spare slot on the administration server and the MDS server, it is permissible to use that
slot to have an extra Gigabit Ethernet adapter, which can only be configured as the site network
connection. This configuration is only allowed if there is only one interconnect, and that interconnect
is a single Gigabit Ethernet interconnect.
