HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System Installation and Upgrade Guide Version 2.2
Planning the networks 2–3
• The DNS domain name of the system.
An example DNS domain name is my.domain.com. Server host names use the fullname form. For
example, the host name of the first server in the south system is south1.my.domain.com.
Unlike the system name, which becomes fixed once you start the software installation process, you
can change the DNS domain name at a later stage.
• The number of servers in the system.
The number of servers that you specify must include the administration server, the MDS server, and all
Object Storage Servers. HP SFS Version 2.2 supports a maximum of 66 servers including the
administration and MDS servers. There must be a minimum of two servers, and there must be an even
number of servers in the system.
• The number of the administration server (the first server in the system).
The names of servers are made up of the system name and the server number, and server numbering
usually starts at 1 (although it is possible to start at another number if you wish). For example, if the
system name is south, the name of the first server is usually south1, the name of the second server
is south2, and so on. During installation, you will be asked to specify the number of the first
(administration) server.
• The timezone the system is located in.
NOTE: Some timezones do not support Daylight Savings Time. Be careful to choose the
appropriate timezone.
The information that you gather in this section is entered at the System menu during installation (see
Section 6.8.1 or Section 7.4.1, depending on the type of storage used).
2.4 Planning the networks
NOTE: Use the worksheets in Table B-2, Table B-3, Table B-4, and Table B-5 in Appendix B to record the
information you gather in this section.
HP SFS Version 2.2 supports six types of networks:
• Gigabit Ethernet networks
• Dual Gigabit Ethernet interconnect
• Bonded Gigabit Ethernet interconnect
• Quadrics interconnect
• Myrinet interconnect
• Voltaire InfiniBand interconnect
Use the information provided in Section 2.4.1 to determine how you will configure your site, interconnect,
and management networks. When you have decided how your networks will be configured, identify the
network information that you will enter during installation, as follows:
• Assign IP addresses on the Gigabit Ethernet networks (see Section 2.4.2).
• If your system is using a Voltaire InfiniBand interconnect, determine the Voltaire InfiniBand
interconnect information (see Section 2.4.3).
