HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System Installation and Upgrade Guide Version 2.2

Preparing for the installation2–2
2.1 Before you start
Before you start to plan your installation, read the HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share Release Notes,
which describe any late changes and known problems in the HP SFS system software.
2.2 Setting up access to the servers
To configure certain settings on the servers at the start of the installation process, you must have physical
access to the servers.
Use the integrated keyboard and flat-panel monitor provided with the system to access the
administration and MDS servers through the keyboard-video-mouse (KVM) server console switch (see
Appendix A for information on using the KVM switch).
To configure the IP address of the iLO on each Object Storage Server, you must connect a monitor
and keyboard (not supplied) to each server individually. When you have configured the iLO IP
addresses, you will no longer need the monitor and keyboard.
To configure the iLO settings on the servers, you must connect a Linux system or a Microsof
Windows® PC that is running a Web browser (Mozilla or Microsoft Windows Internet Explorer) to
the management network.
2.3 Planning system information
NOTE: Use the worksheet in Table B-1 in Appendix B to record the information you gather in this section.
Before you start the installation, determine the following system information:
The system name.
The system name must meet the following conditions:
It must be a string made up of alphabetic and numeric characters.
The last character must be alphabetic.
It must be a valid host name.
It must not exceed 18 characters. HP recommends that you use a shorter name (not more than
10 characters). This will simplify administration and make the CLI output easier to view.
Spaces are not allowed.
The dash (-) character is allowed.
You may use uppercase characters; however, they will be changed to lower case.
The following are examples of valid system names:
south
fs-01server
Once you start the software installation process, the system name becomes fixed. The only way to
change the system name is to reinstall the system.
NOTE: If you have several HP SFS systems with different DNS domain names, consider making
the system names unique. If the system names are not unique (for example, if the domain names
are south.my.domain.com and south.fs.com, the system name in both cases is south),
you will need to assign a nickname to one of the HP SFS systems. This is necessary so that a
client can mount a file system from both HP SFS systems. This is discussed in more detail in
Chapter 5 of the HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System User Guide.
