HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System Installation and Upgrade Guide Version 2.2
Overview1–22
NOTE: Both the MDS server and the administration server are configured by default with 4GB of memory,
while Object Storage Servers are configured with 2GB of memory. MDS servers benefit from the extra
memory for highly meta-data-intensive workloads, and as the administration server is the failover server for
the MDS server, it must have the same configuration.
Extra memory on Object Storage Servers does not benefit write performance, because write operations on
these servers are performed using direct I/O and do not use the buffer cache on the server. Some levels of
extra read caching are possible with larger memory configurations on the Object Storage Servers in
predominantly read-oriented workloads, but this is not the default configuration.
1.6.4 The management network
HP ProCurve Switch 2650 or HP ProCurve Switch 2626 switches are used to connect the servers in the
HP SFS system to the management network. Depending on the size of the system, there may be one or more
switches linked together.
Figure 1-16 shows an example of the connections to a management network where two switches are used.
For more details on connecting to the management network, refer to the HP StorageWorks Scalable File
Share for EVA4000 Hardware Installation Guide or the HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share for SFS20
Enclosure Hardware Installation Guide (depending on the type of storage used).
