HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System Installation and Upgrade Guide Version 2.2

Upgrading a system8–2
8.1 Upgrade process overview
If you wish, you can upgrade your HP SFS server software to Version 2.2-0 while leaving some or all of your
HP SFS client systems at HP SFS Version 2.1-1. However, running different versions of the HP SFS software
on your servers and client nodes is normally considered a temporary configuration.
Note the following points:
If you are upgrading the HP SFS software on the servers but are planning to leave one or more of the
client systems at HP SFS Version 2.1-1, you must configure the HP SFS system to run in Portals
compatibility mode. In addition, the portals_compatibility attribute must be set to weak on
any client nodes that have been upgraded to HP SFS Version 2.2-0. Instructions for enabling Portals
compatibility mode are provided in Section 8.3.16 of this guide; instructions for setting the
portals_compatibility attribute on the client nodes are provided in the HP StorageWorks
Scalable File Share Client Installation and User Guide.
Only one interconnect can be used when the HP SFS system is running in Portals compatibility mode;
you must select the interconnect that is to be used (the same interconnect must be used for all file
systems). Similarly, a single or a bonded Gigabit Ethernet interconnect can be used, but a dual
Gigabit Ethernet interconnect cannot be used.
When all of the client nodes and the HP SFS system have been upgraded to HP SFS Version 2.2-0,
Portals compatibility mode can be disabled on the HP SFS system and the
portals_compatibility attribute on all client nodes can be set to none. Instructions for
disabling Portals compatibility mode are provided in section Section 8.3.21 of this guide; instructions
for setting the portals_compatibility attribute on the client nodes are provided in the
HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share Client Installation and User Guide.
When the Portals compatibility mode is disabled (after all client nodes have been upgraded to
HP SFS Version 2.2-0), the restriction on interconnect use no longer applies; all configured
interconnects can be used.
HP does not support a scenario where the HP SFS client software is upgraded before the HP SFS
server software is upgraded.
When you upgrade the system software on the servers in the HP SFS system, you install the system software
on the administration server and the MDS server from the HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System
Software CD-ROM. All data on the local disk is overwritten. The administration LUN, which holds the system
database that contains all of the system configuration information, is identified and mounted on the
/var/hpls directory. Finally, the administration server and the MDS server are reconfigured, and the
Object Storage Servers are rebooted. Each of these steps is described in detail in Section 8.3.
When you upgrade your systems, all system parameters such as system name, IP addresses, and so on,
remain unchanged.
8.2 License information
HP SFS license files are not version-specific. The licenses include support and update rights. If your HP SFS
system is currently under a support/update contract, you are entitled to upgrade your HP SFS software to
Version 2.2-0 without paying for a new license. If your HP SFS system is not currently under a
support/update contract, you are not entitled to upgrade your HP SFS software.
Assuming that you are entitled to upgrade your HP SFS software for free, you can reuse your existing license
file. During the upgrade process, you will back up your existing license file to the /var/hpls file system
(see Section 8.3.6) and later copy it back on to your upgraded HP SFS system (see Section 8.3.15).
