HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System Installation and Upgrade Guide Version 2.2

Configuring the storage5–26
The number of OST LUNs that can be used by a server is limited by the number of LUNs that the
Smart Array 6404 adapter can work with. Each Smart Array 6404 adapter has two controllers, and
each controller can work with 16 LUNs. This means that a maximum of 32 LUNs can be used on the
arrays connected to the Smart Array 6404 adapter (that is, 16 per controller). This limit is unlikely to
be reached in normal operation; HP does not recommend the use of large numbers of small LUNs in
HP SFS systems.
There must be a service LUN or spare service LUN on each array attached to the Object Storage
Servers.
The maximum storage capacity of an HP SFS system is calculated by multiplying the individual OST
LUN size by the maximum supported number of OST services. (See Appendix E in the
HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System User Guide for details of the maximum number of
supported OST services).
On arrays attached to Object Storage Servers, HP strongly recommends using one of the configurations
shown in Table 5-7.
Table 5-7 shows the recommended configurations.
Example
The following is an example of configuring the storage on arrays attached to Object Storage Servers. In this
example, all of the default options are used, including ADG redundancy and eleven disks in the disk group.
NOTE: If 250GB disks are used with RAID5 redundancy, the maximum number of disks that can be in a
disk group is ten, plus up to two spare disks for use in case of disk failure. In that case, you must specify the
redundancy type and the number of disks per group.
The command is entered as follows:
sfs> configure array 3,4
On arrays attached to Object Storage Servers, this command configures each array as follows:
One disk group of eleven disks, plus one spare disk
ADG redundancy
A service LUN (or spare service LUN)
One OST LUN using all of the remaining available space in the disk group
