3.2.1 System Interconnect Cables

This section discusses the interconnect cables in an HP SFS system that must be connected to a

compute cluster.

An HP SFS system communicates with a supported compute cluster over the interconnect, which

can be:

• InfiniBand

• Myrinet XP or 2XP

• Quadrics QsNet

• Gigabit Ethernet

There can be one or two interconnects. If there is only one interconnect, it can be one of the

following:

• InfiniBand system interconnect

• Myrinet XP or 2XP system interconnect

• Quadrics QsNet

• Dual Gigabit Ethernet using Dual-port HP NC7170 PCI-X 1000Base-TX Ethernet LAN

Adapter

• Gigabit Ethernet using the built-in Ethernet adapter, NIC2

The following exceptions apply for configurations using ProLiant DL G5 servers:

• Because ProLiant DL G5 servers support only PCI Express interconnect connections, Quadrics

and Myrinet interconnects are not supported for use in systems where ProLiant DL G5

servers are used. Only Gigabit Ethernet and/or InfiniBand interconnects can be used in such

systems.

• On ProLiant DL G5 servers, the PCI Express adapter for InfiniBand interconnects is a

single-port adapter. Although ProLiant DL G4/G4p servers have a dual-port InfiniBand

interconnect adapter, only one port is ever used..

If a system uses both Gigabit Ethernet and InfiniBand interconnects, the Gigabit Ethernet

interconnect must be a single interconnect (that is, a dual or bonded Gigabit Ethernet cannot be

used).

Cabling for G5 Servers” lists the possible cable connections to the system interconnect.
