HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share for SFS20 Enclosure Hardware Installation Guide Version 2.2

2 HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share Components
An HP SFS system consists of the following:
A failover pair of administration server and MDS server
Failover pairs of Object Storage Servers (up to 64 Object Storage Servers)
Management network ProCurve Switches
Data storage in the form of internal disks and and HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share 20
(SFS20) Enclosures
KVM switch and TFT5600 rackmount keyboard and monitor
These components are integrated and mounted in a 42U rack with 0U/1U power distribution
units (PDU). The component configurations within the racks depend on customer needs.
The minimum HP SFS configuration consists of two ProLiant DL380 servers, the administration
server and metadata server (MDS), with associated storage. The administration and MDS servers
function as Object Storage Servers in an entry level configuration.
Each pair of servers constitutes a failover pair. Each can handle the other's responsibilities in a
failure situation. During normal operation, the MDS server handles metadata I/O, and the
administration server is responsible for system administration tasks.
An expandable configuration adds failover pairs of Object Storage Servers with their associated
HP SFS20 Enclosures.
All data I/O is handled by Object Storage Servers. There must be at least two Object Storage
Servers (failover pair) in an HP SFS system. There can be from 2 to 64 Object Storage Servers.
The Object Storage Servers are always DL380s unless the interconnect is Gigabit Ethernet and
the number of SFS20 enclosures per server is two or one, in which case DL360s are used.
The storage for each pair of servers is from two to eight HP SFS20 Enclosures.
The following HP SFS components are described in this chapter:
HP SFS 42U 10000-Series Rack (“HP 42U 10000-Series Rack”)
Intel Xeon processor-based ProLiant DL360 servers or HP ProLiant DL380 servers
(Administration, MDS, and Object Storage Server Characteristics”)
HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share 20 Enclosure (“Storage Subsystem”)
ProCurve Switch (“Management Network Switches”)
Rack-mounted keyboard, video, and mouse (KVM) switch and thin-film transistor (TFT)
5600 monitor (“Rackmount Keyboard and Monitor and KVM Switch”)
Power distribution system (“Power Distribution System”)
2.1 HP 42U 10000-Series Rack
The HP SFS rack (Figure 2-1 “HP SFS 10000-Series Rack”) is 42U, or 2 m (78.7 in) high. The rack
houses the components on industry-standard 19-inch wide rails. It has interchangeable perforated
front and rear doors, a set of side panels for each row of bayed racks, and three 200 to 240-volt,
24-amp (North America, Latin America, or Japan) or 32-amp (International use) power distribution
units (PDU), with 12 power-distribution 8-plug extender bars (generally called power strips).
