1 The MDS/Admin nodes are always DL380s. The OSS nodes are always DL380s unless the interconnect is Gigabit
Ethernet and the number of SFS20 enclosures per server is two or one, in which case DL360s are used.
If a system uses both Gigabit Ethernet and InfiniBand interconnects, the Gigabit Ethernet
interconnect must be a single interconnect (that is, a dual or bonded Gigabit Ethernet cannot be
used).
If the HP SFS system provides file system storage for two compute clusters, you must use ProLiant
DL380 servers to provide a sufficient number of PCI slots. The administration server, MDS server,
and each Object Storage Server connected to one of the compute clusters requires an interconnect
PCI adapter in PCI slot 1, the top PCI slot, which can be one of the following for G4 servers (G5
servers do not use Myrinet or Quadrics):
InfiniBand
Myrinet XP or 2XP
Quadrics QsNet
II
Dual-port HP NC7170 PCI-X 1000Base-TX Ethernet LAN Adapter (G4) or Dual-port HP
NC360T PCIe Gigabit Server Adapter (G5)
The connection to the interconnect switch of the second compute cluster is through the embedded
1000Base-TX Ethernet controller, NIC2, (the left-hand NIC) in the case of Infiniband, Myrinet
XP or 2XP, or Quadrics QsNetII. When using Dual-port Gigabit Ethernet both connections to
compute clusters are made through the dual-port adaptor.
It is also possible to use the dual-port adapter in slot 2 of the ProLiant DL380 when an InfiniBand,
Myrinet XP or 2XP, or Quadrics QsNetII PCI adaptor is used in slot 1 and there is only 1 SA-6404
storage HBA used in the system.
1.4 HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share System Block Diagrams and
Rack Configurations
An entry-level HP SFS system consists of the base rack only. It contains:
ProLiant DL380 MDS and administration servers, which also function as Object Storage
Servers
HP SFS20 Enclosures
A management network Procurve Switch
KVM switch
TFT console display
An HP SFS expandable configuration consists of a base rack which contains the MDS and
administrative server, pairs of Object Storage Servers, and the other items listed above. The MDS
server, administration server, and each pair of Object Storage Servers have associated HP SFS20
Enclosures.
An expandable configuration can also have expansion racks which contain pairs of Object Storage
Servers and HP SFS20 Enclosures. The number of expansion racks in the maximum configuration
(64 Object Storage Servers) depends on both the number of HP SFS20 Enclosures for each Object
Storage Server and the type of server used.
An HP SFS system with 10 or fewer Object Storage Servers uses one ProCurve Switch (2626 or
2650) for the management network. Configurations with between 12 and 22 Object Storage
