HP StorageWorks Scalable File Share for SFS20 Enclosure Hardware Installation Guide Version 2.2

management
network
Consists of a private network of administration server, MDS server, and Object Storage Servers.
Handles the management and installation tasks and isolates administration traffic from I/O
activity.
MDS Server Metadata Server. The server responsible for I/O metadata. The second, inactive MDS server is
the administrative server.
network Two or more computing systems that are linked for the purpose of exchanging information
and sharing resources.
Network File
System
See NFS.
NFS Network File System. A service that allows a system (the server) to make file systems available
across a network for mounting by other systems (clients). When a client mounts an NFS file
system, the client's users see the file system as if it were local to the client.
NFS mounted A file system that is mounted over a network by NFS rather than physically connected (local)
to the system on which it is mounted.
NIC Network interface card.
Object Storage
Server
The server responsible for passing I/O data between the HP SFS storage subsystems and a
compute server over the interconnect.
PCI-X Peripheral Component Interconnect Extended.
PDM Power distribution module. Commonly called a power-strip. Distributes power from the PDU
for to the hardware components.
PDU Power distribution unit. Modular power distribution units integrate power outlets, wire, and
circuit breakers on each rack of equipment. Modular PDUs consist of two main parts: the control
unit and the extension bars.
PSU Power supply unit.
QSW Quadrics Supercomputers World.
RAID Redundant array of independent disks.
redundant ROM Reduces the risk associated with system upgrades because the existing ROM setup is saved as
backup during a BIOS upgrade in the event the procedure fails.
SATA Serial advanced technology attached, or Serial-ATA, is a standard interface for connecting
storage devices such as hard disk drives and CD drives inside personal computers. The SATA
interface uses 7-pin cables for the data connection and transmits the data serially.
SCSI Small Computer Systems Interface. The most prevalent processor-independent standard, via
a parallel bus, for system-level interfaces between a computer and intelligent devices, including
hard disks, floppy disks, CD-ROM, printers, and scanners.
storage Storage can either be local to each compute node or external to the cluster.
U measurement Describes the size of components and racks; 1U is 44.45 mm, or 1.75 in.
UPS Uninterruptible power supply.
