2.2.4 Embedded Technologies
The embedded technologies of the ProLiant DL360 and ProLiant DL380 servers include Integrated
Lights-Out (iLO) remote management and dual 10/100/1000 Fast Ethernet network interface
cards (NICS).
Integrated Lights-Out
The iLO device is the console power manager for an HP SFS system. It enables you to power off
and power on the servers directly from the console. The iLO hardware is self-contained. It is
powered as long as the machine is powered. The power manager also provides access to a server's
console. By default, an iLO uses the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) to obtain its
IP address. The HP SFS software uses this feature when configuring the cluster.
Standard features of iLO include remote power on/off, a text interface for remote viewing and
management of the server's boot sequence, server logs, alert forwarding, diagnostics, group
administration, and security features, including 128-bit Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) encryption.
Dual Embedded NICs
The ProLiant DL360 G5 and DL380 G5 include Embedded Dual NC373i Multifunction Gigabit
Network Adapters with TCP/IP Offload Engine, including support for Accelerated iSCSI through
an optional ProLiant Essentials Licensing Kit. NIC1 (the right-hand NIC in the DL380 G5 and
the bottom NIC in the DL360 G5) is connected to the management network ProCurve Switch
2650. NIC2 is connected to the Ethernet switch in the compute cluster when Gigabit Ethernet is
used as the medium for the system interconnect.
The DL360 G4 and DL380 G4 include an embedded NC7782 dual-port PCI-X Gigabit NIC. The
NC7782 is an auto-negotiating 10/100/1000 Mb/s network interface controller, selecting either
standard Ethernet (10 Mb/s), Fast Ethernet (100 Mb/s), or Gigabit Ethernet (1000 Mb/s). NIC1 is
the left-hand NIC, (middle RJ45 connector, between the iLO connection and NIC2) in a DL360
G4. NIC1 is the right-hand NIC in a DL380 G4. NIC1 is connected to the management network
HP ProCurve Switch 2650. NIC2 is connected to the Ethernet switch in the compute cluster when
Gigabit Ethernet is used as the medium for the system interconnect.
2.2.5 High-Availability Features
The ProLiant DL380 and ProLiant DL360 servers also offer the following high-availability features:
Advanced ECC memory: Detects and corrects single-bit memory errors. It can also correct
4-bit memory errors that occur within a single DRAM chip on a DIMM.
Redundant ROM: Redundant ROM reduces the risk associated with system upgrades
because the existing ROM setup is saved as backup during a BIOS upgrade in the event the
procedure fails.
2.3 Storage Subsystem
Each MDS server pair (MDS and administration server), and each Object Storage server in the
HP SFS configuration requires external storage in the form of the HP StorageWorks Scalable File
Share 20 Enclosure, a special dual-port MSA20 that is only sold in HP SFS configurations.
